Newest Max Performance Summer Tires from Michelin and Continental Spring 2017

For spring 2017, Michelin and Continental are rolling out their new leaders for the Max Performance Summer Tire category. This is the category most performance enthusiasts would be interested in for their daily drivers. These will be some of the best summer performance tires for wet traction, dry traction, ride quality and tread life.

Michelin and Continental have been leaders in this category with their previous models (Michelin PSS and Conti DW) and these new tires should prove to be leaders once again.

Please click on these to view each tire. You will then need to enter your tire size to see pricing for that size:

Michelin Pilot Sport 4S

Continental ExtremeContact Sport

Tire Rack will be testing these tires by early summer and I will make sure to post the results.

Please email me directly if I can help in any way. Keith@tirerack.com

Yes, the Conti is not available in 225/40/19.
Although, it is available in the upgraded sizes many people use:
Front - 235/40/19
Rear - 265/35/19

Keith - do you know when Michelin might be planning to release more sizes for the PS4? (e.g. 255/40-18)

Also, have you heard any anecdotal reviews of the Conti vs the PSS in terms of grip in dry / wet?

245/40/18 is the only 18" size that is being released this year.
Next year, as the PSS gets phased out more and more 18" sizes will be available. Although for 2017, 245/40/18 is the only 18" size.

Conti says their new tire is suppose to be a step above the PSS, although we have not been able to test the tires yet so I cannot be confident in that quite yet. We plan to test the tires in May.

Thanks Keith... good to know what to expect with the PS4 roll out; now I can narrow down to PSS and Conti ESC. Tough choice between these two: the reigning champ, and the promising newcomer.

I am using them on my 513M wheels. Turn in is very sharp and responsive, braking distance significantly reduced compared to OEM all season run flats. Overall feels like a go-kart. Handling characteristics seem much better than my RWD activehybrid 3 with MPSS, but then again hard to tell because, different drivetrain and I am dropping a lot of unsprung weight per corner and rolling with at least +3 inches track width vs the activehybrid. These seem to turn sharper on my 440 xdrive than my RWD activehybrid with MPSS. MPSS were softer. These are almost as hard as OEM runflats. Never tried MP4S so cant comment on those.

I'm buying the new conti sports in the upgraded 19 inch size 235/265 along with a new set of wheels. I really wish tirerack sold some wheels in my price range that I like. Some of the OZ wheels are quite nice but they don't quite do it for me and the BBS are beautiful but out of most ppls price range. The other brands you sell are mostly junk imo. I did a search for BMW f30 and some of the wheels you sell I wouldn't put on a golf cart. Why doesnt tirerack sell some mid priced quality brands like Avant Garde, Rohana, Stance, MRR, Velgen, Vossen.

Got my Pilot Sport 4S mounted up, not sure if it was the change in front tire size from 245/35 to 235/35, but the upgrade made a huge difference in handling for me. I had some pretty worn Pilot Super Sports on the front before, and after a weekend on the new shoes, I am thoroughly impressed. Michelin have done it again!

Got confirmation today that my MPS4S tires are in. They get installed Saturday wrapped around a new set of VMR V801 wheels in Mercury Black Metalic.

The Conti’s are a great tire for the money. Smooth and quiet and the handling is excellent. Two thumbs up

I obtained a set of the Continental SportsContaact 6 and after 9 months of use know why they have beaten Michelin as the top 19” Summer tire for the 3rd year in a row in the prestigious German Autobild 2018 19” Summer Tire Tests.

They are the best tires I’ve ever owned.

Too bad they are difficult to purchase in USA, which is strange as they have USA DOT approval stamped on sidewall.

tire pressure

I recently pulled the trigger on some Michelin Pilot Sport 4S and they are a HUGE improvement over the runflats.
I got on my staggered 400m:
245/40/18 front; and
255/40/18 back

My question is what tire pressure should I be at?

Michelin PS4S on I8

Hey, just got Pilot Sport 4 S on my I8
so much better than the Pirellis which were worn out at 16,000ks
Grip is great wet and dry, quiet as and comfortable too.
replaced the 215s on the front with 235/45/20 and the 245s on the back with 255/40/20
luckily the PS4S in a 40 0r 45 profile is a little bit smaller than stated size so the 235s clear the suspension upright by 5 mm, the 235 measures up at 225 at the edge of tread.
Next time I'll put 265s on the rear.
Seriously the best tyres on the market considering the tech.
dual compound and Nylon Aramid belts (no steel) making for a good unsprung weight reduction
Thanks Michelin
