F33 440i Sound and Water Issues
Hi All,
So I've just purchased a 2016 F33 440i and all of a sudden sound has cut out and now getting a "No Warning Tones" message on the iDrive and no sound from Radio or even Parking Sensors or system? I also noticed there was some water around the boot area which is worrying me even more, Does anyone have any ideas? Also where is the HK Amp located so I can see if water has gotten to this? Thanks in advance Aaron |

Had similar with my F32 , it was the HK amp that was smoked and luckily replaced under warranty.
When mine went it fried the centre dash speaker , not only did all the sound stop it created mucho smoke accompanied with that lovely electrical burning scent. K |

The f33 amp is on the left side of the rear underneath panels. I will see if I saved pics when I changed my amp.m
Found some This is the bavsound amp installed Check to see if anything leaked in there. My factory amp is the one in the upper right. |

Hi.
I had similar on my f30 ( not sure if same on f33) I had water getting in through rear fresh air grill -part number 64229176945 (£15) It’s located behind rear bumper on left hand side and leaked on to amplifier which is located behind boot lining on left hand side. Same symptoms, No chimes and intermittent radio ( in my case it died completely) Bumper needed to come off to get access to the grill if I remember correctly. |

Anyway, they said they would try for a warranty claim & it worked, don't think many dealers would have done that.. If you've just bought yr's then deny anything relating to putting golf bags etc in the boot area... |

I believe there's a PUMA case for the vert. Water gets into the rear n/s & fries the amp.
There's a new drainage tray assembly they fit. If your amplifier has fried (sounds like yours has unfortunately), you should be able to have it all done under good will.

Thanks a lot everyone for the replies, Got to the Amp and it's sitting in a pool of water...
I hear people mentioning some drain holes that need to be cleared potentially. Does anyone have any pictures of the drain holes which are near rear passenger side underneath the side skirt or if that's not correct any idea of the location of this? Thanks a lot peeps! |

Check the boot seals around the edge where it meets the back window. Mine needed replacing after 2 years as it was leaking into the boot. Also make sure you dont open the roof when there is water on it as it ships water into the boot.

Thanks everyone for the replies, Do you know if I was to get another HK Amp from eBay etc whether it should be a straight swap or does some coding need to be done for the replacement amp?

Hey everyone, my 2016 F33 just experienced the same issue. After a rain I heard water sloshing around inside the sheet metal left rear quarter panel. I pulled down the plastic cover under the car and allowed the water to drain but apparently the real damage was done. I have the no chime message and no sounds from any audio source. I located the amp but I want to ask a couple of you how you removed it. It mounts on a black metal frame, do you remove the frame or is there a way to remove the amp and leave the frame attached to the car?

Repeated Amp issues in BMW 440i convertible 2019
Hi Everyone -
I bought a used BMW 440i convertible 2019 model. It has been to the repair shop 4 times for the same exact issue: It keeps losing all sound and has no warning tones. They repeatedly keep fixing / replacing the amplifier. I'm now being told by the shop that I must wipe down the car from dew and rain before putting the top down -- as the water is channelling somehow to the amp and they believe this is the cause of the repeated issues. This seems absurd to me - its a convertible after all, and its not like its a first year edition where you'd expect the kinks to not be worked out. I had a Volkswagen EOS hardtop, which was half the cost, and never had an issue nor had to perform any such wipe-down before using it. It is still under warranty and I'm debating getting the extended. Even if I don't get the extended, because this is so recurrent and systemic, I feel they should fix it anyway going forward as it's clearly a design defect. Over the course of time, the car has been in the shop for 4-5 weeks because of this. Can they build a metal box with holes in it in order to vent the amp to fix this? Other suggestions? Escalate up the BMW chain? Waterproofing should not be this difficult?? Thoughts and advice appreciated! -Joe |

We've a 440i F33.
Not had the issue but there is a 'fix' which involves clearing the drain plugs and drilling small holes underneath. There's quite a few videos on YouTube, but also a BMW guide on what needs to be done. We bought ours second hand (2019 model) earlier this year and I got the dealer to do the 'modification' before we collected. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...47023-9999.pdf |

Bought my 2018 F33 440i couple months ago and had the same issue last week. Went to the service appointment today for diagnosis and no surprise amplifier needs to be replaced, thankfully under warranty. Problem is I was told there are couple more people with the same issue still waiting for their replacement order for over 2 months!! So I will probably just be chasing service people and live with that sloshing sound while waiting for an unknown date.

Had the same issue last week, serves me right for driving though flooded roads.
Had amp replaced & now all good. Thinking about getting air suspension fitted [not really] to increase ground clearance up from not a lot, to a lot more. |

Drain plugs blocked in rear quarters, water ingress through window seals and builds up causing flooding in the boot (amp area). M sport sill covers make it worse, these need drilling where plug is, I have removed the drain plug all together and drilled holes in the outer covers to aid free drainage, 1/2 hours task each side, 14mm allen key reqd but a suitable bolt head will fit.

There is no drilling required!
The drain plugs in the cills are plastic and have a stupid lip which holds water. Over time the crud which washes down (and up) encourages lichen and moss to form (as it's dark in there) which block the holes. Removing the drain plugs completely, a 30 second job but you do have to 'bend' the cill covers on the M-sport, will solve the problem. I did mine a few years ago now, but the local BMW dealership offered to do them for free as it is a well-known problem with the F33 (and F32 to a lesser extent). Boot lid seals are a separate issue. My recommendation for ALL rubber gaskets/ seals on any BMW is a silicone-based treatment (Gummi Pflege is good) on all rubber seals.....often. |
