When I checked with my insurance company their stance was "it was fitted at the dealers before you collected the car? Not a modification then, the car is as you bought it"
I rang around a couple of others to double check and they said the same

I had this issue with Direct line and stopped using them, their take on mods was anything that is added above the standard spec even at the factory was a modification, by the time we'd gone through and listed the "mods" (that were not mods at all) the price was stupid.

Declared all my mods on my Fleet business policy but they wouldn't budge on Spacers, complete no,no.
Glad I asked before I bought them.

I've always found insuring cars with modifications to be a PITA. There's quite a few companies that won't touch modifications at all (usually the cheapest ones) and that really limits choice.
Even those that do deal with modifications can be a bit sketchy. I certainly wouldn't take confirmation over the phone that a modification is ok - if in doubt everything should be in writing as insurance companies can quickly change their opinion if there's a claim at stake. When I did own modified cars I usually found specialist brokers like Adrian Flux to be best and they would properly document anything that was different to the usual spec. |

My last three insurerers were Direct line; Hastings direct and admiral.
All three said anything that was added above the standard spec, including factoy fit options, are a modification and must be declared. |

Not worth the risk for a few quid. I declared the dual exhaust conversion on my F31 and NFU Mutual noted the policy but there was no charge as it is only cosmetic & not performance enhancing.

Total load of bollocks that you should have to pay more because you fitted a £100 EBay spoiler to your car!

I found Esure to be good when declaring mods. Had mine mapped and they charged an extra £150 for the year. Can't imagine the risk of extra body parts being any less or more risky than that.
Echoing what others have said, don't cut corners because if something happened (non fault, for example) you'd kick yourself for not spending that extra couple of hundred on the cover.

Yes, absolutely... There was no way I'd roll out of the showroom in a £53k list vehicle and risk losing the lot for the sake of non-disclosure!

I've always declared all mods on our vehicles.
The most mods I had was on our Mercedes C320 (which is where my username comes from). We had the following (not factory fitted) mods declared: Full AMG body kit, including boot spoiler 18" staggered alloys wheels (standard wheels were 16") Lowered suspension (Bilstein B12 kit) AMG exhaust system Tinted windows With the exception of the suspension and the tints they were all Mercedes / AMG parts. It did limit the number of providers that would quote on comparison sites but it's always the right thing to do (in my opinion). |
