How do smog checks work?
I'd like to upgrade my downpipes to a high flow catted version. Am I safe to pass smog checks if the downpipes don't cause a CEL? What exactly do smog check stations look for in OBDII checks?

How are CA people getting away with having aftermarket downpipes?

I only saw them hook up a device to odb port didn't even run the engine. Don't recall seeing them use any mirrors and no tailpipe measuring device. Of course it was a Camry so they wouldn't think I'd have a cat delete. And didn't sound louder or different when I pulled in. It would seem odd that they would use mirrors though just to do smog check. Why not just drive it on ramps and look underneath. If you have under body panels you would need to remove those.
