Audi Badges

Anyone have any idea how Audi's new badging system works because I'll be fooked if I can understand it?

From what I can tell they are slapping 40 TFSI badges on 2 litre engines?

Can anyone shed some light on this and explain how it works with them now?

TIA

I think it is just another way to confuse customers!

Would this help? It doesn't work by engine size but the engine output

So an Audi that has 95PS / 70kW is badged '25'

Looks like a triumph of marketing wankery

Based on output in readiness for electric power - in same way Tesla do..

35 is 1.5 TFSi. 40 is the 2.0 TDi I think. 45 is probably 2.0 TFSI. 55 is a 3.0 petrol I think.

S and RS don’t use same system (thankfully)...

Of course, BMW engines and model numbers aren’t correlated any more..unlike the good old days!

The new badging system is designed to show the power output (even though there are gaps in this categorising system). Also, Audi claim, that power outputs from smaller engines are different now than what they used to be, eg a 1.4 can have a lot more power than you would otherwise assume in the past.

This new system then takes into account the extra power that an electric motor can add. So if you have a 2.0L engine, you can have the badge 2.0 but it wont give you an indication as to the power. So in their attempt to more accurately portray the power output of the car, they use this new numbering configuration.

So 30 has a certain output, 35 will fall into a greater output than 30, and so on.

I owned an Audi 80 1979-81.
It was the worst built, most unreliable car I have ever owned.
I swore I would never buy another Audi and I never have.

If the new system is meant to designate power output then the big question is WHY? Is it some sort of Inter-Audi willy waving contest? If you see an Audi with a lesser number on the back then it is your moral duty to get in front of them so you can ram some power envy in their face and hopefully make them feel inadequate?

Probably won't be long before we have a lawsuit brought by an Audi driver being offended because someone has a higher number on their boot!

PS - BMW isn't much better

And to some extent Mercedes. Maybe it's a German car thing.
