If the issue exists already for you, you will definitely need change the parts out. From my understanding, you will need new timing chain, timing chain guide and chain oil tensioner/pump.
From my research, BMW CA did NOT extend/offer the timing chain warranty extension that BMW NA did (USA and Mexico). There's a few long threads on the N20 specific sub forum that goes into more detail if you were interested: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1415105 |

uncleruckus Apparently auto west BMW in B.C said there is an extended warranty on it, it till next year.
However, I'm curious to know the symptoms of a timing chain issue. |

To keep it brief - you get a very obvious winding sound when the car is idling. As you accelerate the winding sound accentuates.

whiteAngel86 Check out this link for what it sounds like:
https://bmwtechnician.com/2016/08/07...g-chain-issue/ If you do end up getting it covered by warranty, please let us know! From my research, BMW CA did not offer this extension, but I would be happy to be wrong. IIRC, the BMW NA extension was to 70k miles/7 years |

I've heard the same now that it's covered until 112,000 KM/7 years from another Lower Mainland dealer as well.

Wow that's awesome news that BMW CA is extending the warranties as well. Hopefully those who had to pay out of pocket can recuperate their costs!
I wonder if there's a bulletin out there? |

This is all speculation until a formal bulletin has been posted.
The language in the last few posts is unclear.

I can confirm after a quick visit at the dealer that the N20 has the Timing Chain and Oil Pump Drive covered for 7 Year or 110,000km in Canada, as our 02/2015 Production X3 xDrive28i with the N20 has it's extended as listed on their system.

Response from BMW Canada:
Thank you for contacting BMW Canada regarding your 2014 BMW 428xi. Please be advised that at this time, BMW Canada has extended the warranty of the timing chain and oil pump of your vehicle from four years or 80,000 km to seven years or 112,600 km, whichever comes first, beginning with the original in-service date of the vehicle. Your local BMW retailer will be able to advise you if any required repairs are related to this extended part warranty upon inspection of your vehicle. |
