"hard" gear shift when breaking to a light/stop sign?
Hello,
I've owned my used BMW for a little over a month and I would like to know if this is normal. When I am driving and I come to a stop sign and/or light, it feels like the car down shifts or something hard/quick when causes a light jolt feeling when in the car instead of a smooth stop. Also, when I release the gas it'll do the same if at lower speeds. Is this normal? Nothing sounds bad, it's just a feeling I've never really experienced in a car when breaking. Maybe it's just how the car is built and is a little rougher because its a sports sedan? 2015 BMW 335i |

Transmission logic is designed to be sporty - this entails downshifting when braking to keep you in the powerband. You'll notice the downshifting more when in Sport mode vs Comfort mode. I personally enjoy feeling the transmission through the brake pedal

I mean, it makes my body lean forward when it does it. Nothing dramatic, but you def. notice it more than any other car that I have had... Noticed it a lot in traffic the other day. it was hard to creep forward without it pulling you forward. |

My 335i did that more when it was newer, not so much these days although I can definitely feel the downshifts when coming to a stop. In stop and go traffic sometimes the car will get into a mood where it refuses to upshift normally and will rev relatively high before upshifting, leading to very jerky low-speed (<10 mph) behavior. Try eco mode if that happens, it helps a little bit.

Mine does this as well. Been to the dealer 5 separate times for them to keep telling me it's normal. They performed a software update but it did nothing. 2014 335i Xdrive. I've been told the jerking is related to x drive as the rwd people don't feel it as much.

Same here on my 430GC. I would think it's normal and that's what people call engine braking? It's most noticeable after cold start. The idea is for the tranny to maintain a higher rev to warm up the car. Even in normal driving it's still presence simply becoz the tranny setting. It down shifts at lower speed.

I had a similar symptom last year on my RWD. On cold starts coming to the first stop it'll jolt/jerk on downshift as I came to a stop, and sudden jolt as I accelerated, definitely not normal. Then it developed hanging on first/second gear. Took car to the dealer, under further inspection found a crack on the tail end of the transmission where it had a small leak. BMWNA advised them for replacing transmission as it's not repairable. Got new Transmission and problem fixed. Luckily under warranty. Don't know if this is related to yours but I would keep an eye on this for any other symptoms.
