Maybe it can't take a hit. Took me 2 months to get a new bumper and the other day I hit a pothole during a rainstorm, blew the passenger side front tire and apparently did some damage to the suspension. No visible damage, but it's down for the count. And of course every repair place around here is booked solid.

The potential for pothole damage greatly increases with big rims and short sidewall tires, and with run flat tires. Big rims with RFTs are especially vulnerable. Knowing that I got mine with 17s. When I picked up my car the F&I manager tried to talk me into tire and wheel insurance. He had a blown tire on a bent rim in his office as a sales tool. It was a 19. Needless to say I passed on that $1500 purchase.

When I saw the tire was flat I figured I could use my inflator and patch kit, but then I saw the relatively large hole in sidewall. AAA guy asked if I thought I got shot as it did look like a large bullet hole lol. Hopefully there is not a 3rd hit coming for the car. I have driven a rental and the old TL (still a great car) more recently. |

That's typical. The added sidewall layer in an RFT is stiff enough to support the car with no air pressure. That means it can't absorb shocks like a go flat. If the sidewall is particularly short, as is the case with big rims and low profile tires, it has even less ability to resist damage. I hit a pothole with my '07 Altima so hard that it broke the front strut coil spring. The tire and wheel were fine. That was with 17" go flats.

I haven't seen an itemized bill yet, but the total is $2750 (not including new tire) to fix the car although they are still waiting on parts.

Finally got the car back today. Invoice shows they replaced most of the front right suspension: strut, control arms, hub & bearing, et al.
Feels like car has a slight vibration in steering wheel that I don't think was there before. Maybe just the one brand new tire so I'll give it a few commutes to see if it smooths out. Hopefully nothing permanent, but maybe. |

Yes and that's just the car's bad luck as my luck lately hasn't been much better lol. I finally picked it up today......almost no air in the tire! Got pumped up and it drives nicely again. Hopefully that's it for the car for a while. Just need to get a new battery before winter is in full swing.
