2017 4 Series Servicing... £300???

So my 2017 4 series has just made it to one year old!

Time for a service at the local BMW dealership I bought the car from. The dealership is a UK Williams BMW group.

The car has a 2 year/18,000 mile extended servicing interval with two major services, service 1 and service 2, I hear this pattern is the same for most modern BMW's.

Service one is a simple, Oil, Oil Filter and Air Filter replacement with service 2 being a service as aforementioned with also spark plug replacements, new cabin air filter and a vehicle check I believe.

The problem is that two separate BMW dealerships in the local area have quoted me £300 just for service 1, i.e., new oil and an air filter.

£300 for oil and a filter??? So is it a case of simply suck it up and pay the price or is there a better more cost effective way to go about this? Seems like daylight robbery to me but if it has to be done then it'll have to be done I guess!

After conversion to USD, the price is literally exorbitant. I suggest to shop around. Call the parts department to get the price for each part. I still cannot see how the labor could be so expensive.

Very easy DIY if you are so inclined. FCPeuro.com is a great place for OEM parts at fair prices too

DIY = no proof that the car has been serviced at all (if you had a warranty claim, they could easily say that you bought the parts and then just sold them again, not fitting anything).
Best bet is to get an independent garage to do the work, using materials you supply.
However, make sure you keep ALL receipts as proof of the work being done (and appropriate filters and oil being used), and do be aware that you won't be getting any TSBs carried out (such as the water grommet of a few years ago, which could lead to electronics getting fried), and you'll also lose any 'goodwill' which happens after warranty has expired. Also, most independents can't update the on-board service record or BMWs master service record.
You might save £100 or so. But ask yourself if it's worth that much.

My local stealer will allow you to supply parts, so buy the oil from somewhere else as the dealer charges around £30 / litre for that but let them fit genuine BMW filters. Just make sure you get the correct spec oil and you'll save £100 or so
