iPhone 5 Cable

Does anyone know when the new iPhone 5 cable is coming out? I am using a Y cable with a lightning cable adaptor at the moment. My dealership told me August but they didn't seem very convincing...

Are you referring to the cradle in the center armrest? Otherwise, you can just plug in the cable that came with your iPhone5 into the USB port.

It accepts the phone to charge it via the lightning cable but I cannot choose playlists and songs through my centre media wheel. I can only get this functionality through the y cable and lightning cable adaptor. It's quite clunky, I have taken my car back to my dealer to get him to show me and he told me this is the only way until the y cable comes out in an iPhone 5 version.

Cord may be available overseas? Not sure. If you have any insight into that it would be appreciated. Certainly not available in Australia yet, hence post, would like to know when.

If you do not have the option called BMW Assist with Enhanced USB and Bluetooth, you need the Y cable.

The issue is not the cable. It's that iDrive does not have the feature you need to allow you to use the cable.

No actually, you did not establish that you needed a Y cable.

I do not believe you will ever get one. New 3 Series with the new iDrive come with this feature as standard and the existing Y cable plus an Apple adapter solves your issue.

For the record, a lightning cable in a 2013 320i F30 in Australia does not automatically allow you to scroll through playlists and change songs. Thanks for your input but I think my dealer would know what he was talking about in regards to my car.

I am just trying to find out when the iPhone 5 y cable is coming out. Do you know when that is?

I am trying to explain your problem to you so you understand, there is no reason to be rude. You have two problems that you cannot overcome:

1. You do not have the option called BMW Assist w/Enhanced Bluetooth and USB. Because of this, the standard Apple cable will not work for you, you will always need a Y cable.

2. Because BMW is making all cars from 2014 and beyond compatible with the standard Apple cable and are releasing a brand new iDrive system for those models, only the 2012 and 2013 F30's without BMW Assist w/Enhanced Bluetooth and USB would need a Y cable with the new Lightning adapter and that is why BMW isn't making one.

So, I am sorry it is not the news that you wish to hear, but you are going to have to use your clunky Y cable + Lightning adapter setup until you get another car.

You will also find that there are experts on this forum who know a lot more than your dealer does. You should learn to listen to them and appreciate when they take the time to help you.

I've recently upgraded to iPhone 5 and after much research was forced to buy the apple OEM lightning to conventional adapter (30USD) to use the iPhone 4 setup I have in the wife's X3. The reason is due to the elimination of analog sound being supported in the lightning plug. So if you want anything analog to work (like your F30) with your iphone4 accessories, I believe you'll need to get the apple OEM adapter.

With the F30/31s in the Uk (without enhanced bluetooth) you can connect an Iphone 5 to the car using a standard lightning cable and you get full functionality. I know there are issues with non-genuine Apple lightning cables on occasion.

I have tried it myself so I know this is the case. This was a UK 2013 MY car with Pro Media but definitely no enhanced BT.

By the way, I confirmed what I was is true but you need the Pro media pack. With no nav or business nav you do need the y cable.

Hey there I just picked up my 2013 F30 and I have an iPhone 5. I do not have BMW Assist with Enhanced Bluetooth. I am able to use my standard iPhone cable in the USB port. It will charge the phone, allow me to search for artists, and select playlists with no problems. I do not need the Y cord to use my phone and music features.

You might need a software update. I can use functions with just the lightning cable.
