I'm curious. Are you anticipating paying above $3-4k out of pocket on repairs in just 3 years?

No. I decided not to get the warranty on the 340xi for a few reasons. One of them was because I didn't expect to spend that much in repairs, I moved so I don't have my trusted Indy for warranty work anymore, I plan to mod the hell out of this car so without a trusted Indy I might get my warranty voided, and lastly I'm moving to Germany and most of the 3rd party warranties only apply to the US and US territories..

That's my color, I love it.

Ive owned my f30 for about 5 years and besides replacing a clutch (a valet burnt it out which wouldnt be replaced under warranty anyway) in my ownership from 35k-89k I have had zero issues besides a BMW recall repair. If you want peace of mind take the 2,850 and put it into a stock or savings account for if you need it down the road.

The 328i has been the most reliable car ive ever owned.

If you want to have more money in the end then dont get the warranty insurance. It's a business and they make money at it so more than likely they'll walk away with more money than you get from them. If this didn't happen they wouldn't be in business

Not arguing, this is true. I would be thrilled if I paid for the coverage and my engine went.

The same is true for health insurance, yet we all have that.

Compare your average hospital bill with your average car repair bill. I've never read a story that someone had to declare bankruptcy because of an unexpected car repair; I can't say that about unexpected medical costs.

CarMax warranty was far too expensive an option when I was purchasing my car about five years ago. Route 66 was my choice, available through credit unions. Much better coverage and also cheaper. I have another 6 months left and they've paid out twice my cost at this point.

I don't think I've had any repairs - in total - for that amount, that would have been covered by warranty in the past 20 years, all on cars that I've had from 65K to 90K miles. My F30 is now 2 years out of warranty; I had one issue with the vapor barrier in the passenger door which I'm willing to bet would have been excluded from an extended warranty anyway. YMMV.
Consider yourself fortunate for now. Anybody with a 2012-2014 F30 should be very concerned about the timing belt issue that is very expensive to repair prior to failure and even more so if it does fail. The timing belt itself doesn't actually fail but it is the chain guide that does and then the plastic bits plug up the oil pump and there goes your engine.
