Breaking in via wing mirror?
Evening,
I just got woken up by a loud bang, and I looked out my apartment window to see a guy in a hoody trying break into my car. Looked like he was using a tool to lever under the wing mirror, he heard my window open and jumped on his bike and fled. I don't think he was a car thief as his friend was at the front trying to steal a bike, he joined and they both rode off, suspect he was either after the wing mirror unit or just speculating there might be something valuable left in the car (there isn't). Makes my piss boil, because BIB won't/can't do anything about this, so cars in my block get done every week. He's cracked off the plastic that sits flush to the door and bent up some of the metal under, which will all need replacing. but the mirror unit itself is thankfully not damage, the electric folding mechanism and the adjustments all still working. http://[img]https://thumbsnap.com/s/...p.com/DkyGcUJ5 http://[img]https://thumbsnap.com/s/...p.com/gppM77yw Can you actually get into the car via the wing mirror? Or is it possible he was actually trying to steal the wing mirror itself to order? I had to claim on my insurance two weeks ago, after someone drove into me and didn't stop. So I'll probably have to pay this one cash. FFS! Cheers, |

God damn, get a f***in life, people. Sorry to see that, man. As someone said in the steering wheel theft thread, we are the lucky ones who are thriving without having to resort to crime and making a getaway on bikes!

Id imagine itd be pretty hard to get into the car from the mirror or trying to actually steal the mirror since theres a few bolts holding it on. Perhaps he was trying to bend the door from the mirror to squeeze something between the car and door to unlock it

Thanks for the replies.

Unfortunately that is less than my insurance excess, so I had to pay it in cash. I thought that might be the case, steal it, put it on eBay for a few hundred quid. There are loads on there, most of them from scrap yards, but sure there are a few stolen ones too. Problem is, they're a whole unit, so where he has broken it, it is worthless. Or at least, you'd only get something for the mirror element, as the rest of it is all one assembly. He was trying to pry it off, there are no easy to get to bolts to take it off in tact. IN the process he's scratched the door frame and the plastics and rubber. I haven't even had those costed to fix, will leave for now. Last edited by Nick340; 06-02-2019 at 05:41 AM.. |
