190F08 Tank Ventilation System Malfunction Error
Hi
I recently got a CEL on my 2016 320i xDrive. Ran Bimmerlink and it says the error code is 190F08. I’ve already reset the code but it came back on after 50 miles. Reading through the forums, I’m getting conflicting information. Some users say the root cause is the fuel tank breather valve (aka vapor canister purge solenoid) Link Some are saying it could be fuel tank breather line Link Can anyone suggest which one I should change to remove the CEL? I haven’t noticed any rough idle or loss in MPG. Also is it safe to drive with the CEL on for this error code? Thanks a lot for taking time out to read my post. |

Hey man, I'm having the exact same problem on my 2016 N26 428i as well. No other symptoms besides the CEL and 190F08. CEL goes away by itself sometimes but would always come back after a couple of hundred miles. No rough idle, difficulties adding gas or drivetrain abnormalities like some of others have posted. Did you end up fixing it with the vent lines and breather valve? Or maybe it can be as simple as a gas cap gasket?

Did you try to reset adaptation for the DME? Long shot, but it's free. It resets several things along with the fuel vent valve system. It's in ISTA+. Not to be confused with transmission adaption/learning reset.
Resets these: Idle Comparison Knock Lambda Probe Tank Vent Intake Pipe DKP - Throttle Lambda Control EGR Load Control Nox-Sensor Secondary Air Fuel Control Valve Octane Number Variants VVT VANOS Segment Time Combustion Controller Cylinder Sync for EOL-Check Rough Running Cyl Sync Lambda Phaseshift Injector Energy Comparison

I have not used ISTA before. Got the enet cable but procrastinated setting it up. I'm guessing bimmerlink does not have that reset function?
I ordered a new gas cap just in case. Since there are no symptoms whatsoever, I'm inclined to believe that no mechanical parts have failed. But if the gas cap doesn't solve the issue, I'll have to learn ISTA this weekend. I'll report back with my findings.

Not all errors show up with non-BMW readers.
If you get the standalone activated ISTA+, it self-installs all the required modules. Once you connect, do complete test, then pull up the error codes. Save them, or photo them. I believe under Service Function, Powertrain you will find the reset adaptations for the DME. It will list all systems that it will reset. Again, it's a long shot, but at least by using ISTA+ you get to see the potentially hidden error codes that nat direct you towards the problem. There are more diagnostics as well, I think even for the canister and tank vent.

Just to update for posterity-
In my case it ended up being the vapor canister purge solenoid 13907636145. I replaced it and haven't had the code come back in over a month. It was a pretty easy job, just need to remove the driver side cowl panels for more access. Some of the hose clips were a pain to remove a la typical BMW fashion. I also just realized after the repair that this would have been covered under california's SULEV emissions warranty. All emissions parts are covered for 15yrs 150k miles for the N26 engine (not the N20 unfortunately), which is SULEV rated. Could've saved 100 bucks. Oh well. Still kind of strange that in my case there were no other symptoms at all. And the code would only come one sporadically. I guess mine didn't fail completely just yet.
