The GTX 1650 is far more than he needs now, but easily good enough to run high end games if he decides to do so.

I'd argue it's worth spending the extra £50 to get a 1660 to give a lot more headroom. Yes it's overkill for the current games but it's worth the investment for when he get's into more demanding games.

And if he spends another £50 he can get an even better one than that..... that’s how I ended up with a 1080ti!

It is indeed a dangerous game, but it's a significant boost compared to the 1650 and would last a good 4-5 years. The performance boost up to the 1660ti is a lot less substantial. I'd wager the 1650 would struggle to keep up as it would bottleneck quickly.

True, the 1660 is a bit of a beast, actually equivalent performance to a GTX 980!

I’m actually quite glad the 2080 is no more powerful than my 1080ti, if it was I would no doubt have been tempted to upgrade to one by now. No way I’m paying £1k for a 2080ti though!

I'm currently in the 980 camp, wanted to upgrade when turing came out. Saw the 2080ti price and threw that idea out the window! I've left my system upgrade so long the only option is a complete (and expensive) rebuild

Just get a 1080ti, over double the performance of your 980, can be had for around £400 on ebay now. Your processor will only reduce performance by a few fps at most.

To the OP, I would strongly suggest getting a 2nd SSD for his games, and leave the other disk for Windows. Backups will be smaller (no need to bother backing up the game drive), and if he always installs new games and stuff to the 2nd drive there is much less chance of him accidentally bricking it.

I've tended to ride the wave via eBay - sell the outgoing card on eBay, to part fund a new one. For a long while this was pretty effective, I've gone 580 > 680 > 980 and now 1080. I am going to give 2080 a miss though, probably.

I was on a 2500k oc'd to 4.9Ghz for 6 years or so, last year I bit the bullet and went for a 8600k which I'm cooling with water and have oc'd to 5 Ghz. Was a nice upgrade.

I would have went for the 1080ti if I didn't want my next system to last around the next 6 years moving towards either 144hz 1440p gaming or stable 60 4k. Think the 1080ti would struggle for the latter, I will do it at some point, but with the car lease and remortgage coming up in Feb/March my hands are tied.

I want to move to water cooling. The main annoyance is moving CPU means new MB, memory, case (to sell the old stuff), at that point I might as well go the whole way! I know the next cards will be just as expensive, probably even more so being on 7nm, but my last upgrade was a 3 generation gap so I may as well go for another 3 for consistency.

I can't see any difference between 1440p & 4K, even on my 55" OLED, and I can run the latest games on very high settings at 1440p. I can't comment on higher refresh rates though as I haven't witnessed them personally.

Seeing as the only upgrade over the 1080ti is the 2080ti at £1k+, I think you'd be best off getting a 1080ti now, then in a few years time get the then xx80 or even xx70 which will no doubt be more powerful and cheaper than the 2080ti is now.

Price cuts are coming for Intel's core KF chips https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/201...-core-kf-cpus/ ie the ones without integrated graphics.

When it came to my upgrade, I took the 1080 and a couple of the drives out of my old box, then stuck in a 1060 and added a few games on Steam, and sold the lot to a mate for a few hundred, with the promise of multiplayer gaming. Unfortunately we are both a bit time poor, but it took some of the dent out of cost of the new box. New case and fans, 280mm radiator, 8600k, 240GB SSD with Win 10, 750W PSU, 16GB of 3200 DDR4 came to just over 1200 inc. VAT

Sorry to hijack the thread a little but I was also looking for a computer for the kids for Christmas.... but just general use like word and homework etc..... would a gaming pc last longer and stay quicker longer?
Would you recommend the one just displayed for this scenario?

The problem comes when Grandad buys little Johnny The Witcher 3 for Christmas and that £200 heap of junk starts going into slideshow mode.

Don't even look at a flight sim.

The issue is that they never stop at Minecraft and to be fair why buy a PC for three games when a PS4 or Xbox will do the job without any dramas.

I guess they use very cheap motherboards, RAM & PSUs, but a Ryzen 5 is a Ryzen 5, and an RTX 2060 is an RTX 2060, so how do they do it?

Apologies replied to you earlier post.

No idea, they can't be genuine at those prices. I've found loads of reviews on Amazon for chinese stuff to be fraudulent and I report them on a regular basis.

You know your PC's . I think the best advice we can give is to suggest the OP buy from the UK with named RAM, mobo etc ....I've been building since the 90's and now at the VR stage which is pushing the limits

Great site here for the OP
