If you're just looking to remove limiters, increase clutch force and increase shift speeds then this is where it's at. Spending $350 if that's all you're looking to do is a waste IMHO.

8-Speed Automatic Transmission flashing through bootmod3 is now live.

This applies to the ZF 8HP45 transmission cars only. The purpose of this addition to bootmod3 is to lift the torque limits on 3rd and 6th gears that are there on many F series 335i, 435i cars. Without this flash the 3rd and 6th gear load/torque targets (boost) end up far lower than the tune targets (at around 11-12psi) and a DME flash cannot lift them on its own.

This flash is included in the bm3 license at no additional cost like the S55 GTS TCU flash.

There may be further updates to the flash over time to provide additional feature if/where required but this is a start.

In the pics attached you can see an example of the OEM torque cap in 3rd and 6th gears and the change which sets all the gears equally. Not rocket science or brain surgery but it helps get full power in 3rd and 6th gears!
Based on the wording that is used that describes the TCU flash from BM3, i'd say it only increases torque limiters and nothing else. Plus, its free so that is a big plus!

But I am interested to see how it compares to XPH since there are more calibrations and features through XPH.

Hopefully based on the MAP description they are doing a little more than that. I certainly feel faster shifting and gear change blips are more pronounced when testing on my car.

Can anyone explain why the torque limits are imposed on 3rd & 6th gears? Why did bmw/zf setup our transmission like this?

Presumably to maintain longevity of the transmission clutches.

I've read the M235i/M135i never had the same torque limits, yet have the same trans. PTF thought the limiter might only exist for 335i/435i for some reason.

On another note, I am curious how this compares to xHP. I currently have xHP and don't have any plans to swap and try the BM3 beta unless I hear it is much better.

If you already have xhp, why not try the bm3 and compare what you experienced ?

I just flashed it and to be honest, after a 20 min drive, I can't really notice a difference. Drove in Manual-Sport and Manual-Sport+ and got on the throttle hard a few times.
I wasn't able to do a 3rd gear pull due to traffic, but other than that, I just couldn't perceive a difference in shifting speed or smoothness or anything else for that matter.

I would be really interested hearing more opinions from people who flashed it and can compare to an XHP flashed 335/435.

After flashing my transmission felt totally different. Not sure how you can't feel a difference. Try a third gear pull and report back.

I believe the m135i and m235i have slighty different zf 8hp45s. For sure the mechatronics are different between the 135i, 235i vs 335i, 435i

Thanks, I thought as much, but I guess what I mean to ask is, specifically what happens in 3rd & 6th compared to the other 5 gears that it hits the limiter?

Will do.

Quick side question: did you have to pay to get a custom tune from Cary Jordan?

Yes sir.

I tried to re-flash the TCU and got an error at 1% that "flash failed". I cycled the ignition on/off 3 times, re attempted the flash and this time got stuck at 3% and got the same error message.

3rd attempt was finally successful!

I have no idea what happened and why it failed the first 2 times

Also, does everyone's flash finish with the message that the flash occurred in "Offline mode"? Not sure that's normal but i don't remember my DME flash for Stage 1 saying that.

Did you update your agent today? I had no issues with the flash, but I updated my agent prior.

Oh, that's because those are the two gears where all of the clutches are engaged.

As for why the 335/435 seem to be the only ones with this limitation, maybe due to weight?

Isn't this a torque converter transmission? I thought it doesn't have a clutch. I've been out of the loop for a few years when it comes to cars, so maybe I'm wrong.

I flashed today and managed to get in 25 minutes of city driving with a few launches from the lights.
The flash itself went smoothly and took around 2 minutes to download and another 2 to flash it on.
Initial driving in comfort seemed very much the same, maybe slightly higher shift points. But it was very smooth.
In Sport + I managed to get some hard launches and found it shifted very sharply and smooth, but again, hard to easily say it was better than stock.
The most noticeable difference was in 3rd gear (as expected), I no longer had the dip in power as I wound the gear out past 60mph. Will be doing logs for my tuner this weekend and will share If I find anything interesting.

Based on the post on the BM3 Facebook page, I only expected it to be a torque restriction removal tool. Personally my trans behaves much better once at operating temp, and could seem like a tune vs cold.

You should look into how autos work, they're almost black magic. They have clutches (sometimes called brakes) that stop the planetary gearsets to switch gears.

I flashed mine last night and took it out for a spin. A lot smoother upshifting and downshifting in manual mode. And third gear pulls hard.
