Trade in 440 GC for a 328d Touring?

Hi everyone,

(Posted in the Canadian forum but thought this may yield better results)

I had an E91 (3 touring) back in the day and I loved it!!!

Currently in a 440 Gran Coupe that I'm happy with but I bought it for really only 2 reasons:

1) I wanted the upcoming G21 but couldn't wait, so this was a hold me over car.

2) the 440 was priced waaay better than an f31.

Now i find out the G21 will not be coming to Canada at all.

So here's a few questions for all of you?

1) is buying the last year of an outgoing model a bad idea for resale value? (My assumption is yes)

2) I drive mainly 70% city and 30% highway. Is diesel even worth it in my case? (I have a very heavy foot)

Thanks!

That's a huge difference in power output. Diesel has the low end torque and i personally think it's still fun, but nowadays with smaller turbos so do gas engines.

Even with a heavy foot I still manage to be around 450-500km per half tank if that gives you an idea of the km/l

Some people even get 900-1050km on a full tank.

Re the resale value ......
Some folks have speculated that the resale value of all F31's will hold up well in the USA and Canada well because BMW is not bringing in the G21. Later models might do particularly well. I guess we will find out.

1) The diesel wagons tend to have a higher residual value over other models from what I've seen. A later model in this generation with the newest updates (ID6-7/NBT EVO2, digital cluster, adaptive LEDs) will hold residual even better.

2) Even with a heavy foot you'll get better fuel economy with the N47 vs B58.

Are you still able to order new 328ds? I thought 2018 was the last MY for them.

F31 is a good move IMO. Resale should be high demand compared to most other models.

i guess I'll just have to go and test drive one.

For some reason, I just haven't fallen for the 440. I love the way it looks but it hasn't wow'd me. Part of the reason might be fuel economy. My last ride was an F30 and I LOVED every bit of it. Was getting about 500km per tank.

I somehow thought I'd get relatively the same mileage on the 440. Nope! Best I've ever gotten is 420km on a tank. I have a friend that has a 430 GC and he says he gets around the same mileage. I suppose it's because of the weight and maybe my foot has gotten heavier these days. lol

Gas is pretty cheap these days...but getting 1000km on a single tank sounds great! But on the other hand, if it's too slow, it'll just be frustrating.

As for ordering - in Canada you can order a 2019 F31. Not sure about the USA.

Thanks everyone!

You can still order a 2019 F31 (up until June of this year I believe), however it won't be a diesel.

Definitely go with the F31 homeslice! The only thing that would make it perfect would be a B58, but the B46/8 is quick enough to get most people in trouble. For day-to-day it is perfect to be honest. It just doesn't make the right noises nor does it have the silky-smooth delivery of an inline-six.
