Bilstein B14 and B6 Strut Assembly Teardown & Comparison

Ever wonder how a B14 strut differs from a B6 (or B8) one? Well, wonder no more as I show you the differences between the assemblies and their components. Thanks to andino for letting me take apart his B14 assembly.

Also of note, if you run your B14s close to the minimum ride height, check on your bump stops after 10k miles. You my have worn them a lot more than you think!

Just a small correction that my b14s have about 15-20k miles on them. I got them used with 10k miles or so. You'll def want to take a look if you're hearing a lot of clunking from them. Mine made a ton of noise when bottoming out because they don't have any stops haah

I decided to put "10k" in there because when we first took at look at B14 struts when you first got them the bump stops were pristine. I still have the picture of the bump stop back then haha.

Ahh true. They were still in really good shape back then haha. Guess the streets of SF weren't really kind to them

i had a clonk when hitting road joints medium potholes etc.(bilstein b8 and acs springs,) Just as a trial I upped the tyre pressure by 5psi and the clonk is gone. what magic is that? (ps road grip and steering feel slightly worse with higher tyre pressure).

Do you recommend Dinan or F80 rear bumptops for B14 coilovers on F32 xDrive Coupe? Also, at 45k miles should I be getting new front shock mounts to pair with the coilovers?

In general, the stiffer spring you go with, the less stiff bump stop you need. B14's don't have very strong rear springs, about the same rates that M3/M4 non-zcp, F36s, and some other F3x models with EDC come with stock.

Thanks, however, I was asking more in terms of rear bump stop length. I think the stock bump-stops will always be engaged by rear dampers of B14 , given that the car will be lowered 30mm at least, I think I'll get the F80 bump-stops or trim the stock ones.
