Tunes and Fuel Economy

So I think I've had enough time and fill-ups with the KermaTDI tune to have a first pass comparison of fuel economy between the OE, JR stage 2, and KermaTDI N47 tunes. The numbers below exclude any fill ups used at the track, and also any fill ups that aren't standard diesel fuel (such as bio and renewable diesel which have less energy density).

With the OE tune I averaged 35.087mpg over 53 fill ups.
With the JR stage 2 tune I averaged 33.805mpg over 39 fill ups.
With the KermaTDI tune I'm averaging 35.471mpg over 8 fill ups.

Now since the KermaTDI numbers include a trip down to SoCal I thought those numbers might be weighted a bit more than with the other tunes, so with those excluded the average goes to 34.722mpg.

If I only look at fill ups from long road trips (such as to SoCal and back) my averages come to 37.527mpg for OE, 35.4mpg for JR stage 2, and 37.705mpg for the KermaTDI tune.

I was pretty surprised at how high my KermaTDI road trip numbers were considering that trip was done with a Bimmerfest convoy down (and sitting in stop and go LA traffic for a bit more than 3.5hrs from Santa Barbara to Fontana), and I was impatient/in a rush returning back cruising more quickly than my typical 80mph. I know my highway mpg would drop pretty quickly comparatively with the JR unless I had some restraint.

I'll post more updates later on in the year as my KermaTDI sample size grows. It'll be interesting to see if it moves down at all, and if so, by how much.

Thank you for the documentation.
About what percentage city driving do you do in your wagon?

I get similar numbers (calculated tank averages) while driving short 14 mile trips, about 50-60% city. Otherwise my lifetime average mpg is around 36-37mpg.

This is on essentially the same exact engine tune, wagon as well. I need a long road trip to see how that changes.

I am really tempted go get the Kerma tune. Also, I am spoiled. While I do not track it as closely as you I am around 45 mpg for the past 10k (according to the car which I find to be about 1 mpg high or so). Perks of having a rwd sedan i guess!

Yes, that sounds about right for the rwd sedan.
If my old daily beater Jetta ever dies, a 328d sedan would make a nice replacement for it... Maybe too nice.

The wagons are nearly 500 lbs heavier than the 2wd sedans.

I'm surprised the JR was so low, you must do alot of sitting in traffic. With the stage 3 I get just shy of 40 mpg on summer blend. Winter brings it down to 36-37. I'm 90% highway though. Comfort mode 99% of the time for highway travel, sport mode almost all other times. Really never saw any improvement with ECO pro after about 5 tanks so I dont use it

In the intercooler comparison link in my sig you can see my daily driving commute. It's 18mi each way, roughly half freeway and half city streets, although the freeway speeds are typically 25-50mph mostly due to traffic.

When I had the JR tune I noticed city driving dropped the fuel economy on it very quickly. You really wanted to avoid the stop and go from lights/stop signs as you could tell the fuel consumption from that had a big effect.
