Petrol particulate filter warning message

Hi all. Advice needed please. Have Googled the hell out of this but couldn't find anything.

Just got the "Particulate filter needs regenerating" warning message. My petrol F31 is 7 months old and has 5k miles on it. No other trouble so far.

We do occasional long journeys but mostly do short trips. I know that's bad for the car - there's nothing we can do about it.

I followed the handbook instructions and took the car out away from traffic, drive at variable speeds and coming off the accelerator as much as I could (which was a lot). I was out for 1.5 hrs. The warning message is still there. Two questions:

1. What am I doing wrong in trying to regenerate the filter?

2. How long until something catastrophic happens? I can't get to the dealership until next week but still need to use it.

All advice gratefully received - except "don't do short trips..."

Many thanks

Chris

Brilliant. So that's the main reason for buying a petrol over a diesel out of the window then.

PPFs are quite new in our cars and you're the first I hear to have the error coming up, so probably not a lot of clues out there.

From what I know the PPF doesn't need a good long drive like the DPF to regenerate because of the petrol higher running temperatures. Short drives shouldn't be a problem in petrol engines. Which means it could be totally unrelated to how you drive. Just take it to a dealer ASAP. I'm thinking worst case, you'll blow the PPF, but you're under warranty so I wouldn't worry that much. It shouldn't happen at 5000 miles.

GPF regeneration can only be performed in "non power" conditions, meaning that regeneration is normally achieved under deceleration. Deceleration increases the amount of oxygen following through the engine and exhaust system. This in turn raises the temperature of the GPF to around 400c – 700c, igniting the soot contained within the filter.

In conditions where this is not possible, the vehicles engine management systems alters timing causing it to run lean. This "lean" burn increases oxygen and therefore GPF operating temperatures, allowing a regeneration to occur.

Conclusion: delicate new part. Sounds like a warranty job to me.

Thanks all. For what it's worth the car's running fine, accelerating and cruising as smooth as ever.

Will report back what the dealer says for whoever's interested. Can't believe I'll be the only one this happens to.

Cheers

A neighbour of mine has a Kia (I know!),
Anyway he knows I like cars and mentioned this warning light..

Turns out he has the ppf blocked, whether this is a sensor problem I don't know yet.
He's in his late 60's and just does low mileage at probably not very many revs.

So I told him he'll have to go electric next.. no avoiding particulates

I doubt you willl be the only one, but you're probably one of the firsts. It'll definitely be interesting to hear what is causing it. I'm in a feckin' PPF model as well.

Can't wait for tuners to experiment a bit more with PPF-deletes, as I highly doubt it makes much of a difference to emissions...on models that are falling on both sides of the fence anyway. The difference in emissions is insignificant pre and post PPF on these an they have the same Euro standard.

Or go diesel as they've improved and sorted out the dpf's a lot since the old days when they blocked up easily. They'll probably get the PPF's sorted out and not blocking so easily by the time the H series cars come out

One of the attractions for me in getting a petrol was the reduced complexity and lack of DPF issues

Seems maybe now petrols will be just as complicated and potentially troublesome once they're a few years old

I'm not surprised petrols now need a PPF, direct injection petrol engines are very sooty, just look at the tailpipe of a petrol N20 engined car

More so perhaps. It took many years before DPF technology improved to the point that they don't block up so easily as in the early days. The DPF's on the F series cars seem much better at preventing blocking than they did on the old M57 engine back in around 2006.
The PPF is in its early days and will likely become less troublesome in around 5 years, perhaps on the G20 LCI if we're lucky, until then buckle up and enjoy the ride petrol heads

Finally managed to get to the dealer. They didn't seem too concerned. They asked if it was suffering any loss of power (no), asked if the warning light on the dash was red (no, it's amber) so they've booked me in for a diagnostic on Monday 24 June. "It could be a faulty sensor" they then said. I asked if I was ok to keep driving. "Yes, but if it does stop, just call the breakdown service".

I'll take their lack of concern as a good sign...

Will report back after the 24 June with what I hope will be a positive result

Update for archive.

Dealer had the car for one day and couldn't find anything wrong. They performed a "filter regeneration", "reset the software" and all is well. Warning/error message is gone. Engine running smoothly (it never wasn't). All work covered by the warrenty. The chap on the service desk said he'd never seen it on a petrol model.

What year is your car? I'm wondering if my 2012 one has a PPF and whether this is something I need to address whilst the car is still under warranty.

It's a 68 plate 2018. As Hooded has suggested, I think it's quite a new thing on petrol models.
