Not at home now to check but both should do if black colour.
It was on a car for months and it was perfect and not visible.

I don't think it is very model specific. Over the years, the general consensus has been that cars with 'Shadow Line Trim' are more prone...

Trust me no cushion or teflon is needed.
Problem lies in Shadow Black trim we have rubbing on a door seal.
As soon as you put something in between its quiet as should be.

Good luck

I brought the bulletin to the attention of the dealer and they ordered a roll of the 3M Teflon tape.

<Missing Photos>

All and all - fairly easy to do with the attention to detail and prep. Total install time 45 minutes.

Finally no more door creaking on uneven pavement. Problem solved.

The photos from your original post have disappeared. Could you put these up again.... Your post is extremely helpful, many thanks.

I had the same problem. Got some Gummi Plfege Stift by nextzett, it conditions rubber seals. I applied this to the seal around the top of the door frames and voila!! Fixed the problem completely!

Gummi Plfege does work - but only for a short duration; depending on the weather. Best case scenario is it lasts 2 months, worst case it lasts a week - and then the annoying rattle is back.

I am looking for a more permanent solution and the Tape (Teflon or otherwise) seems to be the way to go. This has been confirmed in other forums as well.

Hopefully, the original poster will put up the photos again.

I only noticed this on 2016 3 series, several people at my office have them and they all do it. Does anyone know if this was fixed on the 2017's?

Ok, will see if the creaking sound returns, although for me it’s now been over 7 months without any issues at all

Sorry about bumping old thread but does anyone have photos of where the tape goes? The original post’s photos are gone. Thanks in advance!

I was thinking the same thing (cant see pics). Been experiencing this more and more lately and would like to see exactly where to place the tape within each door frame goes. Also, where are people ordering the tape? Is a $250 roll really necessary? Hoping the value has dropped since this thread was created.

On my f30 the dealer replaced all the window guides which for me solved the annoying squeaks.

For anyone looking for pictures on how to apply the tape, see this thread as well....it links to another guide with pictures too. I just ordered some tape off Amazon and will be doing this over the weekend:

I had a similar challenge myself and it went away after I 3m vinyled my trim to satin black.

Mine use to be chrome.

By gently lifting on the door handle and the underside of the mirror, I could get my doors to squeak, and it seems to be coming from the top seal just as the other thread shows where to mount the tape.

Too me it sounds like when you move around on an old leather sofa or chair.

And the top rubber seal itself seems to be that felt backed rubber instead of a plain rubber seal. So maybe BMW was trying to fix the issue with the different type seal. But it is still unacceptable.

I think I'll try some pure silicon spray I have before I go to the dealer for the tape job.

I noticed this only during the very cold temperatures on one of my rear doors.

I taped the shadowline trim last night using this tape (TapeCase 423-5 UHMW Tape 3/4" x 5yds). I bought two rolls and used a little bit of the second one and it worked perfect....for now anyway, let's see how long it lasts.

Silence is wonderful thing though

Unless your car is out of warranty there is no reason you should be trying to solve this yourself. Gummi Pfledg, while good on rubber seals will not solve your problem. This is a well known issue and their is a TSB (Technical service bulletin) on the issue and the dealer will do it right. My car had this issue and I brought it in after the 2nd week I had it and they installed the teflon tape, which is black and not really visible unless you're looking and its dead silent, and has been for the past 18 months.

Agreed, my schedule has just been really busy and I didn't feel like messing with making an appointment and all that. The tape was cheap, plus it's clear so you can't see it, and it took 5 minutes to put on. If it eventually stops working then I'll just have the dealer fix it, but for now this was the quickest solution.

So, you put clear tape on the top of the trim where the top door rubber seal touches. Correct?
