newbie intro...S4 defector
Hello y'all, been lurking for a few months while searching for a F30, finally settled on a CPO 2016 340i 6MT M sport, 25k miles, with adaptive M suspension, adaptive LED headlights and cameras everywhere. I'm coming from a b8.5 2015 S4 6MT, and while it is a great car, the quattro is pretty much useless in FL and I wanted a RWD. The S4 was also a CPO and it spent way too much time at the dealer getting warranty work done (they had it over a month in one instance) so I was a little concerned about costs after the warranty ran out. Prior to the S4 I had a Mercedes w203 C230 kompressor 6MT, which was lacking in power but a blast to drive. Before the Benz I was in an e46 325i 5MT which was also a great car minus cooling issues not to mention the disaster that was subframe-gate.
I'm already set up with esys, I'm quite familiar with coding from my e46 days (I still have my old thinkpad loaded with DIS, NCS, INPA and even PA soft!) I've already tweaked a few coding mods on the F30, and I also did some additional bits like the ebay spoiler (which I'm still on the fence whether to keep), painted reflectors, CDV delete (went smoothly thanks to this forum) and exhaust valve mod. I also opened up the LED fogs and painted the reflectors yellow. I've also had the glass tinted 30% all round and 80% on the windshield, went with Pinnacle F1 by Llumar. I also had a full front xpel PPF installed. There are many things that the S4 does better than the 340i but overall I'm enjoying the BMW a lot more. Excuse the crappy cell phone shots... Cheers! Nice looking F30! They’re up for me, how do you compare the transmission to the A4?

Good to know they are showing. The S4 had a very good tranny, and matched with Audi's sport differential the car is absolutely fun to drive in the twists. The throw is shorter on the F30 though, a short shifter is almost a must for anyone with a 6MT S4.

Congrats and welcome, after you've spent some time in the 340 it would be interesting to hear more about how it compares to the S4.

About 6 years ago I sold my B7 S4 and switched over to BMW for much the same reason as you. Maintenance was just too expensive and had lots of down time and I only had one car at the time, so it was very inconvenient. I think you will find the 340i more than capable and even surpassing your experience in the S4. Don't get me wrong, the S4 interior is great, but the F30 has it's own charm as well. It might not be as subjectively upscale but I find it much more ergonomic, at least compared to my B7. The 340i is also not a fat understeering pig that my B7 was, so there is that!
Anyway, welcome to the club!

I must admit white was not my first choice, but when buying preowned you don't get to spec the car. Must haves for me were the 6MT, adaptive headlights, adaptive suspension and of course M aerodynamics...with these alone there were never more than 10 to 15 cars available nationwide. The dealer wouldn't budge on the asking price and I was getting weary of searching (over 6 months) so I paid 34.5k. I'm sure there are better deals to be had out there, I just got tired of trawling the internet 6 times a day looking ...

I came from a B8.5 A4 with S line, Sport Package, Tech, B&O.. fully loaded. I had a GIAC e85 tune which pushed it to 340hp and 400 torque. It was pretty fun to drive! Now I have a F30 328i.
I miss the Audi interior, the materials and build quality is much nicer than the BMW. The Audi was also quieter on the highway and it could suck up bumps better. The F30 is more noisy and pot holes make it feel like it'll rattle apart. But, the F30 is much more fun to drive. The steering is more direct and RWD means you can throttle steer through corners and swing the tail out a bit on corner exit if you like. The F30 is also lighter so it feels more nimble on quick slaloms.

The 340i MPPSK is better in every other regard. It is faster than the S4 despite the initial lack of torque from a supercharged engine (vs. Turbo with a slight lag in power build up). The exhaust note and volume is heaven compared to S4's pretty tame exhaust. The technology in car is better as well (compared to B8.5 not B9.0) and sound system is arguably better too (compared to B8.5 Bang&Olufsen) Most importantly, the driving is much more fun in the 340i MPPSK than the S4 ever was. |
