telling the difference between nbt evo id4 / id5 / id6
Hi guys,
Made up my mind to do an NBT EVO retrofit for a 03/15 4-series (with the NBT system). to keep costs down, I'll search for a used unit online. as some of my online purchases have turned me a bit paranoid, I'm trying to understand if there are any physical differences between the evo id4 and id5/6 units. I understand the id5/id6 have more computing power and different GUIs, but I've read that id4 can also be flashed to look like an id5. so - in short, how can I tell whether I'm getting a genuine id5 unit - or just a flashed id4? can I determine that from the part no.? Thanks! |

Hello, I'm thinking of doing the same myself. When you get the unit, check out the stickers. There should be one with the hardware revision. It should read hw 3.1 or 3.2 (if I remember correctly) for it to be a true id5/6 unit.
Id4 I think is hw 2.3. This is off the top of my head, I'm sure someone can correct me on the specific numbers if I'm incorrect. Having said that, I'd purchase the retrofit directly from codemybimmer or bimmer tech to be honest. It will be more expensive but you'll have the peace of mind that the unit is indeed what you want and it will come precoded. Please let me know what you end up doing and how it goes. I'm very interested in doing this myself (I'd be updating from an id4 unit for a 2017 - manufactured in 2015 - 340i) Good luck! Last edited by rsm_CR; 07-11-2019 at 09:50 AM.. |

thanks for the details, rsm_CR
I did get a price quote from bimmer tech, but it's above what I would consider reasonable for this type of retrofit. I admit it's a fair offer considering what you're getting, but I already have the NBT system - which is pretty good - I just want the added wireless carplay functionality and it's not worth that much for me. I also had a chat with steve@codemybimmer and he was extremely helpful and patient (I'm new to this, I asked a lot of questions), but they can't provide the h/w I need (I live in Europe). I will probably end up having steve do the coding, if I get the used head unit. to be honest, if I were in your place, I would just try to flash the id4 unit to id5, to see how it works. it would save you a lot of hassle later (like losing connected drive services, for example). I've read various reviews - some people say it's quite unstable, while others are very happy with it. |

Quote:
The menu of ID4 looks like the old NBT with list view. ID5 and ID6 have the tile view (don't know if it's the right word in english). ID5 has 6 small tiles and ID6 has 2x3 big tiles. |

does anyone know the technical difference between 3.1 and 4.1 head units? there is a significant price difference between second hand 3.1 and 4.1 head units. i would like to know if it's worth paying the extra?
i want to retro fit nbt ID6 to a 2015 f31. |
