Ive taken my car in for a EPS error today and asked BMW to also update the NBT due to crashing issues. I will try and install 2018-1 maps again when I get it back to see if it makes any difference. |

Hi Shrubbery. I mentioned a crashing issue to them amongst some more serious issues (that requires a new steering rack) so until I get my bill I wont know if they have itemised that bit of work or its just all rolled into one.

How did you get on with the repair work? Did they manage to fix the head unit rebooting?

So BMW had listed my crashing nbt issue on the job sheet but as the car needed coding for a new rack and EPS they just said the NBT will pick up an update if it needs one. As all my settings in the NBT (sound, lights etc) were the same when I got the car back, I dont think it has gone up a software issue (Istep) For that reason I havnt tried reloading 2018 maps.

Quick update.
The dealer has replaced the head unit under warranty and has coded the ECUs. This has fixed the issue with 2018-1 maps but I don't know if changing the head unit or changing the firmware fixed the issue... I suspect probably the firmware but not going to whinge about a new head unit (including replacement cracked radio buttons).

Hi I seem to be in the same boat with my 2013 F31 330d, having just updated to the 2018-1 maps.
Has anyone got a link they could post for the 2017 maps as the only option I get from BMW's map update tool is for the latest maps that seem to be causing the issue? Thanks. |

Hi
I have been having the same issue and struggling to find a solution. Following the NBT NEXT 2018-2 update (via usb), the process completed and all seemed fine. Until the next day, when I started the car up the entire idrive system kept stopping and then suddenly rebooting itself! I have tried to reinstall it and also go back to previous version (2018-1) But the system does not stay on long enough to continue with the update. The car is 2013 and out of warranty. I have contacted an independent garage which is willing to take a look at it tomorrow but at minimum cost of £90 regardless. (Bmw want £150 just for diagnosis!) Can anyone offer and solution or ideas? Thanks In advance |

As I said above, I didnt see any reboots when updating to 2018-1/2 maps - the issue I had was RTTI related (slow nav interface, route lost while driving, slow to calculate route/reroute...
Back in March my local BMW dealer (Thames Ditton) wanted to charge £99 just to look at it - if you are going to an indy, just check they are at least able to upgrade your iStep so at least you pay for something. In March I had the diagnostics done by a local guy I found on facebook marketplace - the diagnostics was done in front of me, 5 mins to connect the laptop and see results - the car reported no faults he charged me £50 - he wanted £100 extra to do the iStep... I didnt do it (yet) I would say be patient, perhaps revert to 2017 if possible, otherwise just see if the car sorts itself out on 2018-2. My car issues sorted themselves out when I disabled RTTI which BMW said it was a UK wide issue but as I said, I never had reboots - now things are back to normal (running 2018-2 and RTTI). anyone? edit: the car is from 2013 edit: I found that from time to time nav stops rebooting (in my case it was 1.5h of constant driving), i have used that occasion to reload earlier maps. Since then everything seems to be ok. Last edited by cassius777; 08-03-2018 at 08:22 AM.. Reason: problem fixed |

Interesting thread!!!
I have exactly the same problem with a 2013 F10 I upgraded to 2008-1 maps ok, 2018-2 upgrade has resulted in constant reboots. When i did the upgrade i left the car running and when i came back the idrive had reset - it never requested the activation code. I will see if the rebooting stops after a long drive - where can i obtain older versions of the maps? BTW, has anyone updated a 2013 F10 to the 2018-2 maps successfully? |

2012-2013 cars are using an old firmware on the HU, hence they can't show the content of the new map and it will restart the HU. So an ECU update of HU_NBT must be done.
You can do it at home also, as I just done mine with E-Sys and the full version of E-sys PSdZData. I had my I-Step version 12-07-533 and went to 18-03-532. Be aware it will take like 1 hour if you have the basic hard drive. I have upgraded to SSD and my job was completed in 28 minutes. You will need a power charger if you don't want to mess the ECU during the update. Last edited by XuLeTZ; 08-08-2018 at 05:32 AM.. |

I've not had any issues with 2018-1 NEXT map updates, there are links floating about for those.

Same issue. 2013 m135i. Used bmw map update the official one through connected drive website download today.
Followed instructions perfectly to a t and as soon as finished updating constant reboots. This is 2018 next - 2. As bmw has the software updater programme on windows I cannot select an older map to rectify the problem. A. Im not happy bmw are updating software that wont work on 2013 models. Vin number etc is all required when downloading so surely BMW should be aware of compatibility problems. Thats £60 wasted (I would have been more than happy of they would have just said the service is not available) B. How do we get this sorted officially? Who to complain to? I will be firstly asking my card issuer to refund for ‘faulty goods’ sold by BMW and now either pay for a bootleg 2018-1 or BMW dealership for istep upgrade or even a new head unit! |

What I would do before you talk to your credit card company, is speak to then BMW ConnectedDrive team first - report the issue and hopefully you get them to sort it out, see if they can book you in and get your software updated...
In any case, they are able to refund you too - I know this as I got the RTTI subscription refund from them early this year after that renewal caused issues in my NBT too. |

Thanks and good advice.
just fired off an email to them now - see what happens. Don't think this is an isolated incident with regards to 2013 cars from what I can see AFTER doing my research - rookie mistake.... Have booked for the dealer in the interim which wont be for a few weeks. Car goes onto 87.5 fm frequency with static noise every 30 seconds and does not remember last settings or last volume mute meaning any sort of driving is becoming very tiresome........... |

Quick update, replaced idrive and updated software by dealer.
What a hassle but Credit where credit is due and sytner group were very helpful. My advice is if you have 2013 car do not update the maps (probably too late if you are reading this). I am not sure if BMW have tested all their map updates with all the iterations of idrive there are out there - although they should be more thorough as its married to the VIN! It might become clearer which cohort of cars this will affect as more people update their maps in the future. |
