Octane Booster and Superknock?
Decided to try and add some octane booster at my last fill up with 93 octane. I have been running 16 PSI on my stage 2 set up with stock fueling for a while now and no issues (straight 93 usually).
It was a little hot but nothing abnormal. I get on it maybe 20 minutes after driving and throw super knock codes at WOT with injection shutdown on two cylinders. Can anyone lend insight as to whether the octane booster could have precipitated such an event? The other consideration is that it was coincidental with some other cause. I've got 92K miles on the car. Coils and plugs are only 7K old, however I am running original HPFP and injectors. I suppose if there is an issue with fuel distribution I could have had a pre-ignition event for my boost demands. |

octane booster is completely useless. Try to get some MS109 and toss in there. Early 2000's use to mix toluene with pump gas to make our own race gas

Agreed. I used Torco a bit but hated how it left my plugs. Off the shelf boosters are useless IMO.

Depends what octane boost you use. Boostane, Torco, VP Octanium, and Royal Purple seem to work, with Boostane being the best. The off the shelf garbage at your local gas station doesn't. I personally think race gas is overpriced compared to pump with a can of boostane.

Boostane is $16 for 16ozs on Amazon... how many points does it raise the octane.... I hope at least enough to run E85map on a tune if I'm using 93octane... If so I'll probably try a can... it takes 4.0 gallons of E85 if you have 93octane to begin with to get to 30% (96octane) to use E85map on MHD based on 15.8 gallon fuel tank ... Just found a place that sells E85 and it's only 20 minutes away! well until traffic hits.... I called and at this moment don't know how much it costs... Update: Holy Moly!!!! Found the mixing chart .... One can of Boostane will raise octane of 93 octane to 100octane!!!!! ..... I'm totally in on this.... ease of Amazon Prime and no traffic and basically cheaper than E85 ounce/octane a gallon Last edited by FastF30; 08-15-2018 at 02:35 PM.. |

In my case it was not octane related but 100% tune related. My car is 335i xdrive 2013 6mt and a custom tune solved this problem literally on the first revision from my tuner. Is your car auto or 6mt?

So I calculated this all out... Wow... In order to use the E85 map on MHD you need basically 96 octane... using the mixing chart from Boostane.... I went with 97 octane to be safe... equals just 4 ounces of Boostane Premium mix... which equals $4 extra a full tank fill-up.... now that is cheap and easy to do especially with Amazon Prime... Now your beating stock M3's....
But come to think of it... your not getting the same cooling as with an ethanol blend... so I'm wondering how well it will work out... Last edited by FastF30; 08-16-2018 at 01:28 AM.. |

Your pwg tapers to 15psi at the manifold near redline (I assume that's what you mean by up top)??? Ummmm..... ya right. Maybe you are looking at target boost.

Working on it....would like to go full flash soon. I've reduced to Map1 for now, targets 14 PSI across the board and car is doing fine. I think it was a coincidence of an overly aggressive tune and a hot day! |

I seen this post and inclined to add to this, i was ok stage 1+ stock plugs ngk brand, i switched to 1 step colder ngk and 2 drives or so after although other day seemed to be ok i got superknock code for cyl 5. I think the step colder plugs arent the best choice. I switched back to stock ngk see what happens tomorrow or so.

Boostane Professional - Daily Driver
1.28oz per gal. 20oz per 16 gal tank = 100 octane
Yes orange plugs and inside of exhaust tips. WGAF. Orange instead of Black. So what. Bought 5 gal. should net about 7000 miles of pure fun!

Also don't have to deal with all the fueling upgrades required to run E30 and above. LPFP, HPFP, etc. Yeah, E85 may net a few more HP. Not worth it for me at this point in time. When I upgrade the turbo and go to forged internals? Maybe.
