While I understand why people think it is odd to change said name of an icon, I also agree with you as a whole.

Personally, I'd just remove the badges and call it a day.

I hate 4 too, especially in China, the pronunciation of 4 is equivalent to "death..."!

but i don't think that's a big deal....beacause i will make a 335i badge in the trunk instead of 435i.....

Big mistake IMO, why M4 ?? No lineage to anything! The original E30 was an M3 Coupe...

I don't like the 4 series crap either, but I think you are exaggerating quite a bit here. I know everything about the legendary M3 name and I believe BMW is making a huge mistake disregarding it like it doesn't have any relevance. Any other brand would kill to have something with as much history as the M3 name has.

However, when it comes to your statement above, you are basically saying that you've been driving BMWs for 28 years because of the name of the car??

It is actually a myth. Audi sell the A4 in China , in great numbers especially the A4L the car the 3er Li is setting out to challenge.
The 4er was in China recently to appear in evaluation clinics, whilst it might be superstitious to some , it is completely oblivious to others.

Due to the flexibility of the modular matrix that underpins the whole 3er family, the car will inherit a longer wheelbase and an individually elongated roof panel to stretch the car over the regular Coupe.

The Coupe itself is again seen as a formidable answer for those that want the sportiness and sleekness of the 6er but cannot stretch to the asking price that goes with it. As with all BMW's the core aspects of what makes a BMW will not be forgotten , expect a more sporting character than the already award winning F30. BMW know the customer base for the F32 and they know what drivers expect in terms of overall communication.

Interestingly enough the 4er Gran Coupe will possibly be the direct challenger for the Mercedes-Benz CLA or the recent Concept Style Coupe.
Although it is classed as the smaller A-Klasse. The car (if the concept is anying to go by) is actually bigger and longer than the C-Klasse.

The significant aspect of a 4er Gran Coupe allows the profitability of the whole F30 family to increase with the flexibility of adding individual concepts.
If you take the 6er for example the Gran Coupe also increases BMW's profitability in the high end of the premium market.

The E92 is still the benchmark for this segment and the F32 will be its prime successor. Individual style , character and involving driver communication.
The new 4er Coupe will arrive in early 2013.
will M sport be available from launch or would we have to wait till september like F30
this will most likely be my next car as my lease will be up in june and there is no way i would want this car without M sport
and the car looks great even with all the camo

So you guys seriously won't consider the car based solely on how it is named? Who cares what it is called as long as it performs at or above the level of the current car.

As Red Bread said, the roots would originally be the 2002.

Technically, the original E30 M3 was a 2-door sedan.

I think its gonna be more of a cross between an old 3 er hatchback and the GT series look with that huge tail it's got. May allow for some more cargo room?

This reminds me of a time in 2003 just after the launch of the BMW 5er (E60).
A Customer reminded me that he was going to buy the next M5 but will not because of the "Bangle designed 5er".
Not only was the designer of the 5er - David Arcangeli (who sadly died of Leukemia before he saw the final production car).
But as I reminded him do not worry sir, I am sure there will be a customer for your car!
