Had the pleasure to do this again... Germany failed my car on inspection for aftermarket LEDs.... but said nothing about downpipe... go figure.

To bend back the bulb retainers

Use a solid wire for example from a mig welder make semi tight loop. Then try to hook the clips you want to bend back at 45° angle if you hook them straight you'll hook too far back and you'll be ripping the retainer instead of bending. Once you hook it pull on it on an angle to produce more of turning force towards the bulb hole. Here's some pictures. Done on my E90 pre face xenon headlight. But the clip is the same for the F30.

I don't see an easier way of doing this. And having this method in mind there's no more fear of bending it too far while removing.
