Recall 21V-907: EGR Cooler (again)

New recall came out for N47 and N57 cars today. Looks like cars from the last 18V-755 recall are getting a redesigned part, regardless if you passed inspection or not.

Quote:
Approximately 14,120 Model Year 2013-2018 BMW 328d and 328d xDrive Diesel engine vehicles were equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooling component (“cooler”) that, over time, could start to internally leak glycol coolant.

Basis for recall population determination: Supplier production information was used to identify the start date and end date of potentially affected EGR modules, of a specific design configuration.

Recall component difference to non-recall component: Recall component was not produced with sufficient long-term durability characteristics.

So, if I understand this correctly, the recall EGR cooler part had flaws?

They used the same exact supplier from Korea for it as the original... I'm guessing, not use them again?

Usually recalls that involve a design defect require a redesigned part. When the 2018 recall came out, I was surprised how some of our cars were disposition with a simple inspection and the replacement EGR cooler was same as before. This newest recall is more in line with what I'm expecting.

The first recall did get a different part number. Since it's a fairly simple radiator, I would have hoped they changed the welds or fittings inside.

If I understand new recall language correctly, this time:
- EGR cooler will be replaced (regardless weather it is leaking or not)
- intake manifold replacement will be performed based on the inspection results

Previous recall had inspection condition on both EGR cooler & intake manifold replacement

So to sum up, at minimum, all N47/N57 engines should get new EGR cooler this time around

I saw this yesterday, too. They did all the work on my 2015 Touring, O2 sensors, EGR, guibo and replaced the transfer case.

Now, with the next EGR cooler, maybe by the time I get the nod, it will be clear that I'll need the new HPFP done, as well. This car may never get old!

Last recall they just checked mine and and only replaced the washer. :

Now if only my VIN was part of the fuel pump recall, id be happy.

Same story with my car too.
I had NOx sensors replaced under warranty though some time back.
My VIN is not part of fuel pump recall AFAIK.
Dealership doesn't have parts yet for EGR recall. They haven't started repairs for recall yet. Letters will arrive mid Jan 22.

Typed my VIN into BMW's website and the EGR cooler recall finally shows up. No remedy available though.

Sweet, I got a recall notice as well in Canada:

Recall Campaign No. 2021-711: EGR Cooler (11 85 21RC)
Database last updated: January 17, 2022

Looks like it was just updated today.

I received my EGR cooler recall at the end of last week. It's going in on the 26th. SA indicated they'd replace the EGR for the cost of the part (no additional labor). Might as well do that since it'll be apart anyway (98K miles).

Nothing on the HPFP for my car yet.

Received the same notice today. Letter says a remedy is not yet available, they'll send another notice when it is available so I can schedule an appt.

I did get a "low coolant" message earlier last week, but the car had been parked outside in very low temps as opposed to the garage where it normally lives. I simply topped off with water.

Will await further info.

Checked website, mine is now listed there but no letter as of yet. And no fix yet so… soldier on until then.

Edit - Dealer canceled my appointment. Said parts weren't available and they shouldn't have made it in the first place. Great alternative to driving 45 minutes one way and finding out in person!

Wait why would they charge you for the cost of the part it's a recall?

I suspect the dealer offering to replace the EGR valve for just the cost of the part while they are performing the recall work to replace the EGR cooler. By the looks of it, the recall only replaces the cooler and the old EGR valve is transferred over to the new cooler. The valve is Item 3.

I know the recall gets you a new EGR cooler, coolant, and (maybe) intake manifold. Wont know for sure if there's any other new goodies to come from this recall until the we see the SIB for it.

Oops! Autocorrect gave me 'paid' instead of 'made'. I fixed it. Sorry about that. However, I am going to PAY for a new EGR valve when they do the work. Might as well since it'll be apart anyway.

This is smart. I will pay for a new EGR valve too when recall is available. Also, would like to pay to get a new intake manifold while I am at it if the intake is full of carbon when torn apart...

EDIT: I see they will replace the intake manifold for free under warranty IF it fails inspection. I imagine the inspection will be for melting or damage from leaking/overheating EGR cooler v. an intake full of carbon.

A new intake manifold is over $1000 and that doesnt include any additional labor to install it. You might be better off doing a carbon cleaning instead and maybe a walnut blast.

Yeah - Looking at prices I assumed they would be cheaper... Agreed cleaning the current one is way to go.
