I have a 2016 version NEXT that works with an emulator box. Is there a way to backup the idrive + maps/current setup before upgrading to a newer version, and able to revert?

I'm very glad to meet people like you today. I have an F30 (330e 11/2017) from US without built-in navigation with id5 (tile) interface. Only spotify and bluetooth media work through the phone. Is there any way to activate carplay?

No. To revert back you would simply install previous map, which I can't imagine having a good reason to ever do so. If you use Emualtor, your Map FSC Code must be based on Donor VIN, not car VIN.

Maybe. Without Navigation, I cannot confirm Head Unit type. Need to read ECU list with E-Sys and tell me exact name of Head Uit as shown.

BimmerCode is not a reliable source for this. Need Esys, and need to know if its ENTRYNAV or ENTRYNAV2.
