There is a thread on a forum somewhere about the NOX sensors. There are people who replaced their sensors out of warranty, out of their own pocket. There is a letter from BMW/NA to submit those receipts for reimbursement. I'd hope a similar process exists for the transfer cases, particularly if they were part of the CV-Joint "Giubo" recall. I'll try to see if I can find the link to that.

Try this link - show it to someone at your BMW dealership, if they weren't aware. I think you might be able to have your repair reimbursed. Not a promise but it's better than nothing.

Update:

So BMW of Palm Springs is not covering reimbursement cost for my work done in October. They said my Transfer Case broke internally back then. What?! My "Flex Disc"(what the SA called it) wasn't rusting but still replaced it with the new part. Well of course it wasn't because you guys switched it out last October. Anyways, I'm done with this shitty dealership. She did suggest putting in a claim for reimbursement with BMW NA. Has anyone had success with them before?

I would definitely try to kick this one up higher than the local BMW dealership. How many miles were on your car when you had the transfer case replaced in October? I think it would be worth a try with BMW NA.

Use www.bmw-rp.com for it

When/if it becomes available. I just realized it hasn't been updated yet.

I was curious about all the transfer case failures, and the claim of correlation between them and factory staggered tires setup, so I did a quick search through here and another forum for F3x transfer case issues. Thus far I've found 28 instances. Tutuapp 9Apps ShowBox

Although it seems many, it's not enough for BMW to make a big stink about it. When I went to the dealership they never mentioned my wheels as an issue. I am currently running 18" staggered APEX SM-10 wheels but on square 245/40/18 tires. It also maybe the fact that this wheel set up looks close to OEM and I have BMW center caps. (Old photo below with Apex caps)

Just had mine replaced. Bone stock 2015 328i

My 328d had it replaced at 49k, also bone stock. Both cars babied to my knowledge.

Staggered tires or not, appears like it doesn't matter. It's unfortunate this transfer case is basically on a 40k mile replacement interval.

Was it not on this thread that someone mentioned a letter from BMW that transfer cases are going to have a recall soon?

The recall is in effect now. Mine is in the process of being replaced under the recall without any prior known issues.

Oh wow thatís great news.

Iím on my third transfer case and at 71,000 miles, the 4th one will likely be needed in 4000 miles.

Strangely I have never received any recall notices from bmw. Did they send you a letter?

They did send a letter and my dealer called as well just to make sure I was aware.

I got the recall letter (it said there was no remedy yet) but when I took my 328d wagon in for the EGR recall, they said they did have a remedy for the giubo - in stock. When they inspected the transfer case, it was damaged and waiting to let go, I guess. They got approval from BMW/NA to replace the transfer case as well.

I've been driving the car for a few weeks now since the recall work was done. I'm very happy I have a 5 year old new car! Mileage went back up to 44mpg (highway) and I've seen diesel fuel down to $1.87 in Colorado (Denver area) so I'm grinning ear-to-ear. Good luck.

P.S. I'm not the first owner of the car but I think it was a square setup on tires. Don't think it was a factor in the wear & tear on the transfer case. I suspect it's a combo of the wrong giubo and the heavy pounding the diesel engine gives the drive train.

Anybody know the cost in the UK for out-of-warranty TC replacement?

January-2015 320d xD.

Can I just buy any ATC35L transfer case, do the loctite trick and fit it and swap my module over, or do they vary between applications?

If I'm getting hold of a used TC, what should I be replacing on it to make sure it'll last?

You can buy any second hand ATC35L, put loctite, rubber giubo, and then use your module.
Choose one from a 6-cyl or V8 BMW for best results. Petrol preferably.

*However*, the calibration code inscribed on the replacement transfer case must be registered in to the transfer case module, and then calibrated via diagnostics. This is very important.

Thanks.

What's the difference between these two parts then?

It lists two parts for item 1, but describes one as a transfer box and the other as AT-auxiliary transmission.

Physically, nothing. One is a part number for the transfer case which you must return the core, and one is the original one.

Presumably the one ending in 725 will be the rebuilt ones from cores.
