335D OEM Engine Oil N57 Engine
There are plenty of old threads on this but I believe BMW changed preferred supplier to Shell from Castrol in 2015 and I am stuck.
It's due for its first service & my local stealer wants £20.51 per litre of their oil but is happy for me to supply my own. I'm not tight but my pot of gold is finite. If I can get the same stuff for less I'd be silly to throw away upwards of £50.00. The nice chap in Chandlers BMW parts dept says their oil is 0w-30 but the Shell website pushes 5w-30 ECT as the preferred oil for the N57 and their new 0w-30 ECT alternative isn't even LL-04 compliant. Amazon sell genuine BMW oil but they have 0w-30 and 5w-30. Both in BMW bottles & both LL-04. Is either OK? Is the Shell oil the same as wot's in the BMW bottles as that's far easier for me to source? Can someone who works for BMW please help me out. Confused?? I am |

BMW don't make oil. Anything in a BMW branded bottle is just someone else's product. The key thing here is to use LL04 oil. This is the BMW spec number of the oil.
The difference between 0w30 and 5w30 in the UK for a road car is pretty insignificant as we don't ever see the ultra low temperatures where 0w30 would have an advantage. Either is perfectly fine for your car. |

As Gep says, either 0w30 or 5w30 is absolutely fine in this country, especially down in Sussex! Any LL04 approved oil will be adequate, get whatever's cheapest.

I used this on my 328i a few weeks ago
http://www.carparts4less.co.uk/cp4l/...4551&0&cc5_247 Two 5 litres will be less than 70 quid (make sure you use the discount codes) and give you plenty left over. I used a genuine BMW filter Its a slightly messy job but really easy, make sure you have the right tool to remove the oil filter. |

I used Shell Helix Ultra 0/30 for a mid service oil change, very rattley up top wouldn't recommend. Was glad when BMW serviced and changed.

Many, many thanks for all your replies.
I have bought the shell ECT 5w-30 from Carparts4less as did Sasq. It's the top recommend oil from Shell for the UK N57 and BMW use shell albeit one of their 0w30 oils here in Sussex. 7 litres delivered for under £53.00. Yes quantity required for N57 is 6.5L with filter change. |

Is this Halfords 5W30 Fully Synthetic BMW/MB Oil 5L any good for a 335D ? Only £38 for 5 litres at the moment.
