BMW Sinks from #5 to #8 in Consumer Reports Reliabilty Study

BMW moves #5 down to #8 in the annual Consumer Reports Reliabilty Study. BMW’s Average Reliabilty Score is also down 3 points from last year, 61 to 58.

Consumer Reports also removed its coveted CR Recommenced Rating from the X1 and X3, which, of course, had really been the bright spot of BMW Passenger Car sales.

BMW X1: The X1 dropped to below-average predicted reliability, with reported suspension problems, premature brake wear, and steering wheel vibrations.

BMW X3: BMW’s redesigned X3 was below average, with climate system problems including leaks, and seat controls that required the seatback to be replaced. A BMW spokesman said the automaker has not seen “any systemic issues related to either vehicle.”

The X1 and X3 are 2 of the 12 models that lost Consumer Reports’ Recommended Rating.

The BMW i3 is BMW’s most reliable model.

BMW’s Mini brand saw the Cooper improve to average and the Countryman to above average.

Well something must have happened recently to bump down the overall
Its been silent on my 3-series.. the 2 has nothing to break so its usually atop
so I guess its chalked up to those new SUV/crossovers
do you have their writeup?
BMW's issue in CR usually was the electronics

Couple this with their shrinking warranty and maintenance support, and they are looking less and less appealing. My main reason for sticking with them for now is that they are the only "premium" brand still offering manual trannies (other than sports car specific brands like Porsche and Jaguar).

Once they drop MT, I will have no reason to support them anymore.

Makes sense i3 is the most reliable. The interior in the i3 looks amazing and very original. The second hand market for the i3 is very reasonable. I've had my eye on that car for a while. It'll make a great daily driver, especially if you live in the city and parking is scarce.
If manufacturers can build a battery with long range and quick charge, it will appeal to more people.

Subaru and Infinity stand out as having their worst/best vehicles based on the same platforms. The Subaru Impreza is the base for both WRX and Crosstrek, and Infinity Q50/Q60 are the same car with different body.

Really goes to show how good the cars have become when one component (like the WRX's transmission) pulls it to the bottom of the list.

The 0-60 time on the Crosstrek is 9.2 seconds. I could have a cup of tea in that time.
The 2017 Infiniti QX30S and the Mercedes-Benz GLA250 is practically the same vehicle. There's a lot of this re-badging and parts sharing that goes on.
