Hey guys, not too familiar with engine work outside of routine maintenance.
My 2013 328ix F30 is having engine issues. I would start it but the RPM would drop and it turns off. After 4 attempts it finally stayed on but it struggles, No error codes appear such as drivetrain failure Its got 115k km (~72k miles), a cold air intake with the associated turbo inlet pipe as well. No other engine bolt ons/mods I checked for the whining noise the previous night by revving it up to 3000 RPM for a few seconds but sounded normal to me. Serpentine belt felt fitted and not excessively worn. Spark plugs and battery were changed about 25k km (~15k miles) ago Do you guys think its a sign of the timing chain about to blow? Attached the video of it starting up below Thanks in advance for any input |

When I was researching the issue, it appeared the high pressure fuel pump was an issue for other people with these symptoms

ive just had the exact same issue. originally the car stalled once randomly about 6 months ago, wouldn't start at the time but after a few hours worked fine. fast forward this week and the cars doing exactly as above.
originally was no error codes but while driving the car, stalled mid use and this left me with an error code for the high pressure fuel pump. theres a few guides on youtube. ive ordered a oem bosch pump and plan to fit this week so will let you know how it goes. |

two ways of confirming this. either remove the rail from the high pressure fuel pump and cover it with a coke bottle and then try starting the car and see if fuel comes out. this can also be done direct from the fuel pump tank underneath the seat by removing the fuel line and again placing a bottle there and see if fuel comes out. this should save you time identifying which went faulty as looking around seems like both can fail on these engines over time. |

FWIW you can't rely on the dashboard warning lights to tell you what's wrong. You need an OBD diagnostic tool, either a standalone like Foxwell/Schwaben, an app that connects to the car via a smart phone or tablet, or ISTA BMW dianostics software.
