No kidding. Mercedes actually used the term "Sportline" as a badge on its W124 models in some markets in the mid 90s to designate a package that included lowered suspension, black leather, color coded plastics and different wheels.

I totally agree... I hate the trim naming system...add that to the long naming system already on the X-drive, the new grand coupes, 4-series... oh my goodness.

So, when someone is admiring your car and they ask you what it is, your answer will be:

...this is my new 435i M-Sport Gran Coupe X-drive Modern Line.

Are you F***in kidding me?

lol

Are they making it almost impossible to walk onto a car lot and choose a car with most (if not exactly) the options you want? If they have so many options, more people are going to order. Maybe profits are higher from those that order as opposed to take what is available on the lot? I don't quite understand their logic, but I'll save final judgment for final press releases...

Oh, and I'll keep on driving my paid-off 330i ZHP

IMO I think that's how the lines will work:

M sport will be standard on the Sport line
Premium and Convenience are standard on Luxury
Modern will have no packages standard... you just pick whatever package you want expect for M-sport... maybe sport package will be available.

Off course every line has its own colors, exterior differences like states before.

I'm not sure about BMW's other markets, but here in the US, the only other company that offers a Sport an Luxury model is Mercedes. Hence, why they are pulling a Mercedes.

thats the best way to say it, BMW will be mocking Merc's. The only thing I can hope for is that BMW allows much more in depth customization, or else this just seems kind of shameful.

BMW has lost its way. First is the stupid 4-Series. and now with these lines stuff. I'm just really disappointed. Why can't they just focus on making good cars? or so they said, "joy"? I don't feel any joy in these names... I want an "Ultimate Driving Machine" with "Joy", not an "Ultimate Name" "JOY".

Ok. Back to the key discussion... would be cool if they made the key color-coded to your car's body color! Would be really handy for those of us who have multiple (different colored) cars.

no because there is cleary a Msport pkg developed seperately from the Sport Line on the F20 ... the new 1 will be our leader in terms of whats to come, BMW is clearly stream lining their product image and consistency of options

"Joy" was undoubtably the worse campaign and conceptual image of their brand ... and unfortunately it trickled down to auto production and IMO it all plain old sucked. I think what they are doing is much needed (i still havent grown on the 4series naming etc, but i understand the rationale and that deserves a grain of salt). Marketing is working to improve on a great brand ... nothing stays the same forever. And as someone in marketing/advertising i cant say i blame them. We constantly look for new and improved changes to our clients identity ... consistently advancing on what we believe to be the future.

Give em some time and i think well like what we see looking back

DING! DING! DING!

This is exactly how GM sells their cars. Each model has 3 or 4 different lines.

For example Cadillac have the: luxury, performance, premium.

I don't know how I feel about this. I like being able to option and spec a car out, but I can't help that feel BMW is starting to be run by marketers, and that bothers me.
