I thought one of the models was going to be the 328d... as per some spy shots that were published a couple of months back.

Good news for the US market.

Given the current line up in the EU there is little to no chance of there ever being a manual 335d.

The X1 would have been a great candidate. Oh well, no hydraulic steering diesel for me.

I'd be more interested in this if they went as far as adding these engines or at least a 335d to an F33.

I might, big maybe here; be okay with an automatic or DCT version instead of the MT if they did this.

Guess one can dream....

I absolutely agree. I'm not all for buying a brand new car... BUT make it a diesel wagon, with Msport and a ED might very well be in my future.

Make mine Estoril Blue or Melbourne Red, black interior, Step (it'll be a DD), cold weather package, HUD.

Ok have to stop daydreaming now.

You can keep wishing then. 335d can't be had anywhere in the world with MT. And doesn't look like they'll bring the coupe either. So 0 cars for you then

In states which have heavy mandated biodiesel blends, will these engines still work is my question for BMWNA? Many VW's etc have been having difficulties with some of these B-20 type blends in certain states from what I read.

I drove a 335d loaner a few times and really liked it. One issue in the US is that diesel fuel is more expensive than premium petrol in many areas. Still, this is a great solution for larger heavier vehicles.

That is great news, but dont just offer the diesel in the 3 series sedan, offer it in the coupe too! also dont offer a 1.8 Diesel (example) for the 5 series! BRING GOOD ENGINES AND WE WILL BUY THEM! IF you bring the 640 diesel then i will be the first person to place an order on one.

There's no such thing as a 335d MT. It just won't happen. Besides, everyone that is hoping for a 6MT, have you guys ever driven a diesel with MT? Really not that fantastic
An 8spd AT hooked up to an I6 diesel is the perfect garage mate to my M3.

Good call on the Estoril. Man, I'm getting excited about this car!

No manual option for the higher torque diesels even in Europe. Think the 3.0L turbodiesel engine found in 335d, 535d and X5 xDrive35d has close to 400 lb/ft torque (~600 Nm) and the reason not offering manual is that few "civilized" clutches can handle that.

My previous car, a 2009 E91 320d Touring was a stick shift, and the car before which was a 535i. Despite the additional feel and control a manual transmission gives for a daily commuter car I would not trade away my new X1's 8-gear automatic even for a second.

After long trips (500 km+) around Europe in the 320d and the 535i I could really start feeling the thigh muscle aching all the way up in my back.

And especially for a manual geared four-pot diesel, the range in which it delivers the torque is hughely narrow in compare to the petrol equivalent. Easy to find oneself 'in the wrong gear' a little too often. But then again, it's all about preference.. maybe I'd still go for a stick-shift 330d with 258 DIN horsepowers... tough choice!

Yes, very much agree. Engine and transmission characteristics much match and all that torque really is best mated towards a silky smooth AT. I have driven the 335d and it's a brilliant car and the gearbox works very well. My dad also had a e320 cdi Mercedes with a AT with a sport shift function which worked very well for sporty driving.

But again, these diesels are for eating up hundreds of highway miles while returning 40mpg, not exactly for lapping laguna seca.

I think Saintor just jumped out a window.

I'm glad to see the sportwagons are also getting diesels over here. I would've gotten a 335d wagon if they were sold in the US!

Absolutely. I've driven my share of 120d, 320d, 330d all with MT's. To me anyway, the fun part about having an MT is to be able to rev the engines, then perform the perfect shift.

With diesel engines, you get to play with 3-4k RPM's, then you have to shift again. Also a pretty jerky experience too.

Thank you BMW. Just need to get that V8 diesel to this part of the world, and we'll be set.

BMW doesn't have any V8 desiels. They have the 2.0L I4s and 3.0L I6s. I think you're thinking of the X5/X6 M50d and M550d which are all 3.0L I6s with 3 turbos.

I've driven a few diesel Jetta w/ m/t one was modified although still not as much performance as the 335d... Point is diesels w/ a m/t aren't all that fun to drive because the power band is so narrow.

Like it was mentioned before it would take a heavy duty clutch to handle the torque. Most people wouldn't be able to operate it comfortably.

I'm very happy with my 335d although I wouldn't mind having the 8spd for even better mpg's.
