Upcoming EGR cooler recall

I had my oil changed yesterday (12/30/21) and the BMW service person said there's going to be an EGR cooler recall coming soon. He didn't know when it would arrive (nothing shows up when I run my VIN), but here are the details from my paperwork:

Defect Code: 0011280600
Defect Description: B110921 Recall: EGR Cooler - N47T High Temperature
Bulletin Number: B11 09 21
Recall Number: 21V-907
Campaign Status: 00-Open

He also suggested that I replace the EGR when they do the cooler as it would just be the price of the part (no extra labor). I haven't dug into what that means yet, but I figured I'd pass the information along to this group.

Yep, word is getting out.

I think your SA was referring to the EGR valve, which bolts right on to the cooler. Considering the part itself is around $150-200, that's not a bad idea at all to do some preventative maintenance.

The procedure to remove the EGR cooler also calls for a coolant drain and fill. This is another plus for preventative maintenance as well.

Thanks! I did a search first and didn't find the post you referenced.

LCornice hello, did you perform this service action? What did the service replace? It pays to go and do it?

No, not yet. They cancelled my appointment because the parts aren't available. I checked with the dealer last week and there's still no ETA.

I am on the recall list and was wondering if you had a part # for the EGR valve. This is for a 2018 328d.

Thanks!

EGR valve part# 11717810871.

But good luck finding them online. Most places I've looked don't have any in stock.

EGR Recall complete

I was able to get my car in for the EGR recall the other day and figured I'd post the information. The recall includes an EGR valve, so I didn't have to buy one, as I originally intended to do. My intake was fine, so that was not replaced. Here are the parts and a couple of bad pictures. Enabled - looks like they put in the gaskets.

Edit - coolant was topped off, not flushed.

Thanks for the update. Do you know if they top off the coolant or do a coolant change/flush?

Good question. I emailed the SA to ask. I'll update the thread when I get an answer.

I just dropped off my 328d for the EGR recall. I made a small mark with a sharpie on the EGR valvle to see if a new one comes with the EGR cooler. I am also going to have them do a coolant change just because I like preventative maintenance.

Will let everyone know how it goes.

This isn't the correct procedure. The prerequsite work to replace the EGR cooler is to drain the coolant. It's physically possible to replace the EGR cooler without completely draining the system, but the moment the cooler is removed coolant is going to drain through the ports where the cooler was. This would expose the coolant circuit to air. At minimum, the dealer needs to do a vacuum fill after the cooler is replaced.

I appreciate the info. I can check again. It is running just fine, for whatever that is worth!

Do you have documentation that shows a coolant change is the correct procedure when doing an EGR cooler? MY coolant change is going to cost me $200 and if I can provide them so info that might save me some money!

It should be part of the EGR replacement procedure to drain the coolant. It's also BMW's position that coolant should never be reused. You should be getting a free drain and fill out of this recall rather than a complete flush.

I asked about the coolant change and they were adamant that this procedure did not require a coolant change. I figure the new EGR valve made up for the coolant change, which was $195 for me. Confirmed the EGR cooler includes a new valve.

Thanks

Ask to see the repair procedures for the EGR cooler replacement. The one for the recall slightly differs from the normal procedure due to the physical differences between the old and redesigned cooler. But both should call out draining of the coolant.

I'd be OK with letting it go if and only if they vacuum filled it or bled the system. Under no circumstances should there be air in the cooling system, which this repair introduces.

I don't believe the recall replaces the actual EGR valve I can't see the part number anywhere on the invoice
