Side Wing Mirror Folding Motor Repair

Hi

I have a 2013 328 and the driver's side mirror motor (used for folding) stopped working.

A few observations:

There is no motor sound during folding process (passenger side works normally though)
Mirror tilting works - so issue appears to be limited to mirror folding

I can't find detailed info that explains whether this is a repairable issue or if there is a motor replacement required. And if so, how to go about it.

Hoping someone has had similar experience and can point me in the right direction?

Thank you.

Mine failed while under warranty, but the mirror tilt was also not working. They tried cleaning the contacts but ended up replacing the assembly.

Is yours out of warranty? Shouldn't be too hard to troubleshoot, but I don't know if they sell the individual parts or just the assembly.

Thanks jsouth

Looks like it it was frozen in closed position.

We had a warmer day today and it's working now. Car is just over 5 yrs old so assumed the worst. Should have known better, it's a bimmer after all

I had even sprayed de-icer but it didn't hit the spot I guess.

For others experiencing this in winter, assume it is likely stuck due to icing and manually fold it to open position (didn't hurt mine doing so)

I'm glad you didn't have to replace -- IIRC the part was well over $500US.

Isn’t this the exact reason that the mirrors don’t autofold when you lock the car as overnight they may freeze? I’m in uk and we don’t really get the extremes of elsewhere but if it looks like the morning will be below then I don’t fold my mirrors in.

I have my mirrors set to auto-fold upon lock - using CA I have to hold my finger on handle a leetle longer to get them to auto fold after lock/alarm. If I just touch the sensor - car alarms & locks only

So if I know there is going to be heavy snow or ice, I don't allow them to auto fold

Yes, mine is similar, don’t have CA but if I press and hold the lock button on the fob the mirrors will fold.

I just coded the auto-fold/unfold with lock/unlock feature, and then got to thinking after the fact that maybe I am just setting myself up for excess wear and a failure sooner... I think I need to increase the delay so I can have more control over it for only when I absolutely need it because right now it does it right away.

Hi, please excuse the newbie post.

I have a F30 320d ED 2012 (UK).

The driver's side mirror motor has stopped folding the mirror back, while the passenger side mirror continues to fold up.

The mirror angle adjustment on the drivers mirror doesn't work either whereas it does work on the passenger side.

It sounds like an electrical (fuse) problem to me, although looking at the fuse map, it suggests that only one fuse (22) is involved for both mirrors.

Any thoughts please? Thanks in advance.

That was exactly the failure mode of mine. Entire mirror unit was replaced under warranty.

f30 328i side mirror issue

Hi everyone,

My passenger side mirror stopped folding and unfolding. This happened one day after i had it coded to fold/unfold using key fob.

I do hear the motor grinding and I have gotten it to work sometimes by moving the mirror and it seemed to "latch" but only worked once and now refuses to fold/unfold.

I am a complete noob so i apologize for this

Don’t know to be honest but it does sound like a tooth or teeth on a cog used to fold/unfold the mirror has/have broken off. Knowing BMW it’ll be need a new mirror?

From recent experience I'd advise you to disable it I had mine coded for auto folding for about a month or so. The weather and constant unlocks and locks with no delay caused my passenger motor to go out. Now I'll be needing to replace the whole housing, since opening it to replace a motor is almost impossible, at least for me. I tried it and ended up breaking the mirror and disassembling the motor is tricky.

I'm in your same boat, I haven't figured out how the mirror comes apart to get to the motor for folding/unfolding. Did you ever figure it out?

Good luck. This isn't a simple DIY.

The tsb is a great document to help you break down the mirror to its core components. I was able to break the mirror down as far as the tsb provides without using it, its simple, you just need to be careful. The two aluminum halves must be separated, and this isnt covered anywhere that i found and i was puzzled for a bit. Pictures would help here, but just to describe until i get a chance to make a video. After breaking it down i placed the mirror part in a vice with the unit upside-down. Then where the mirror rotates you must gently lift the base up and away from the mirror with some screw drivers or plastic pry tools. Then you rotate the base of the mirror (it can only go one way) and one you get it to a certain point the two assemblies will be come apart.

I also found that the gear box is different than any information out there on the e90 chassis and it isnt really serviceable because the entire unit is sealed. So these single gear sets that are for sale most likely wont help. I will try to use some heat to separate the sealed unit at some point but there is good news

Mercedes from what i can tell uses the same gearbox and it is purchasable for around 85 bucks which is way better than 450 (used) to 650 (new) for the entire mirror assembly.

PN: 099-820-19-00 driver side
PN: 099-820-20-00 passenger side

I have not 100% confirmed this works but will have it on order today.

I got the Mercedes part in today, fit perfect. I posted some pictures, there is some slight differences with the reinforcement ribs if you look close but otherwise they are identical. Saves over $500. I posted some pictures to my instagram below. Mercedes part on the left, bmw on the right. Now that i have the new gearbox and it works, Im going to try and take the old gearbox apart to see if the gear kits for $16 will work. It looks heat sealed, so im not sure how successful the adventure will be.

LuckyStrike24, I have a Passenger side mirror that broke off with downward pressure.
lets just say a person fell on the right mirror and by the looks of it, dis-lodged it.
so the folding part is just hanging by the wires.
since you repaired yours, what do you think if it is repairable?
by the looks, it doesn't look like anything broke, just came off.

any info on repair would be appreciated.
PS: mirror work 100%, including camera.
I can not find any info on how to take it apart.
