TMPS Intermittent warning

Seasons greetings all!

I drove home from London to the north for Xmas yesterday and had an issue with intermittent warning on the dash saying TPMS RDC failure. It happened about 6 times during the 250 mile journey and each time would reset itself after a while.

Actually happened first on a short journey last week but only came on once and I made sure after this that I checked all tyre pressures and reset the system on the Idrive.

No other symptoms and everything else working fine. Anyone experienced this before? I’ve ready about wheel sensors being possible culprit but there doesn’t seem to be a lot of info out there!

Thanks

How old is your car? The sensors are battery powered so must have a lifespan of some kind?

It’s just over 4 years old. I don’t know if there is a specific warning for individual wheels re battery in the tpms or if the failure is a generic warning that can be identified by reading fault codes?

Hopefully it's just a tpms wheel sensor that needs replacing and not the RDC Module.

How many miles has the car done? Apparently TPMS batteries can die after 5-6 years but I suppose it’s possible for them to die quicker if the car has done high mileage as the sensors only transmit when the car is moving.

Thanks all. It’s done just over 50k miles, so would have hoped the batteries should last longer but who knows. Fingers crossed it’s not the module - I was wanting to explore all possibilities before taking to dealer in case they just default to the most expensive option!

They can be disrupted by low ambient temperatures.
Was the weather cold on the days of the activations? Could well record a sight drop in pressure as the cold gets worst.

Not particularly cold - probably a range between 2 and 9 degrees?
