Oil too full message and service intervals

Hello everyone,

Got my first BMW in December, 420d Coupe on a 15 plate.

Everything has been great so far.....until I got bored the other day when waiting for the wife.

I started playing with the setting and done a tyre pressure check, that went fine.

I checked oil level screen and that was fine - Then I done another oil check and after following the instructions on screen, it informed me that the "Oil Level Is Too High"

I've not touched the oil since I bought it, any ideas whats happened please?

Just for history, its had a BMW Service at 12,000 and 30,000. The garage I bought it off in December done a Service (not BMW) at 47,000 - Its now got 50,000.

BMW website says the car has a Service Pack which runs out next year - No idea what that is?!?!

Thanks for reading

Mick

Most likely it has been just a bit overfilled in last oil change. Most BMW diesels still have also a dipstick, check that as well.

There are some situations which could cause diesel to weep into your crankcase and cause oil level to raise. Have a sniff under the oil filler cap, if you think it has a diesel scent then take it to a BMW specialist to get further diagnosed.

Ok, had been led to believe there was no dipstick but there is.

Checked it and it’s quite full, the oil seem quite dark in colour

Dark is normal - gets dark immediately after changing. Don't worry about it.

Yes oil in diesel engine looks horrifying if you are used to gasoline cars, it gets black really fast. Smelling like diesel however is not normal.

If on level ground the dipstick shows over full then your need to correct this. You should remove oil until it at the max level.

As other have said it could be an issue if diesel is getting into the oil or simply the oil was over filled at some point.

I would have the oil changed and do regular checks to determine what is happening. Diesel leaking into the sump could be a major issue if not caught early.
