New car secured, worth the 8 hours 15 min round trip

Today I drove the 217 miles from Halesowen, West Mids to Cooper BMW Sunderland, to see four pre-registeted Black 420i M-Sport Gran Coupe cars that had been advertised for a great price of £25890. (other colours available) All had sports Auto, Professional nav and M-Sport plus pack, no miles and black leather.

First decision was Carbon Black or Black Sapphire. Although I had heard great reviews of Carbon Black and that it was exclusive to M-Sport cars I actually didn't like it. It looks far too blue/purple. Thought the Black Sapphire was 'blacker', and liked it better.

Then had to choose from a car with carbon aluminium with pear trim, blue stitching and Orbit grey 704M wheels or Brushed aluminium and black gloss trim, black stitching and Ferric grey 704M wheels. This one was one month newer at April 19 and had the updated rear under bumper trim (like a mini defuser)

I went for the latter and am part exchanging my 320i M -Sport. Pick up in a weeks time...and another long journey.

.....and the list price is under £40k so no extortionate car tax to pay.

Congrats ... did they give you a fair price for your 320i?

I am happy with the deal overall. We all think our cars are worth more than they are, and even if you look after it well it seems to count for nothing. I was offered £13,300 and bartered to £14,035. It seems like a strange figure but it means I get the new car with 12 months tax with £12,000 to pay.

I bought my 320i with a big discount and paid bang on £27k in December 2015, so simply on the part-ex price it has cost me £12965 for 3 years and 7 months motoring (£301 per month depreciation) Don't know how that compares to a PCP.

However I am getting a new car, albeit 3 months old and the second registered keeper but with about £14k off. I put the same car into the configuration and it comes out as £40,500 OTR price.

I feel like I have done well.

Great looking car, especially with that new diffuser!

Just needs black grilles and exhaust trims and it will be perfect.

Haha...I knew you would say that. I quite like the contrast of the chrome, especially with the bright wheels.

Just put my private plate on retention. Let's hope the new log book comes in time.

Until the tips get covered in carbon & tar spots etc

Black ones just always look black.

You travelled from my neck of the woods.

Lovely looking car and great price. Buying pre reg really is the trick if you're flexible on options.

The bit of Sunderland I saw was okay. It's a long way though, especially trying to get home on Friday afternoon.

What was your average MPG on the way back? Out of interest.

I took this picture for the total journey, but bear in mind I hit quite a lot of traffic on the way back on a Friday afternoon so it went down from an average of 53 mpg.

Yes 48.5 mpg for a three hour 40 minute journey there and a four hour 35 min journey back. Hit plenty of Friday afternoon traffic coming back and got diverted off the M6 and through central Birmingham. So it was around 53 mph for 350 miles then down to 48.5 mpg overall. Good for a petrol!

When I collect on Saturday there will hopefully be less traffic, and a gentle drive back in the new car, bearing in mind 'running in'.

All the best people travel 100s of miles to the North East to buy Sapphire Black 420i Gran Coupes for 25K. They also put black exhaust tips on and swap the grilles out.

Sometimes they chuck a spoiler on too. And if they look after them they look like this after nearly 4yrs of ownership (Photos taken tonight.).

Congrats, it's a cracker and a good deal on the price too.

Nice car, I rarely ever see those variants of the 704 alloys on the roads.

Really good going, about the same as I manage in my 420d.
