£1,855.05 LED Adaptive Replacement

Back in the day, if a headlight failed, quick trip to Halfords, £8 and 10mins to install.

If a single LED has an intermittent fault then they need to replace the whole unit. For £1,855.05. Sure I've bought whole cars for less.

To be fair, BMW have offered a good will gesture and reduced this to £650. Which is still eye watering.

Suggestions? There must be a market for repairs on these. Otherwise I seriously suggest not having LED adaptive headlights as the cost to benefit when they go wrong is to high.

Any ideas folks?

Doesn’t sound right to me. Looks like the LED modules are a replaceable part.

Makes the £108 I've just spent on a rear outer tail light seem pennies by comparison!

There should be an exchange replacement available.

For a lot of major (read expensive) components, the replacement part is service exchange.
Eg.:-
Steering rack.
HP fuel pump.
Fuel Injectors.

Doesn't appear to be new parts available for these.
The failure rate must be high for a manufacturer to implement this system.

Can't see why it should just be mechanical bits.
Maybe that's the goodwill price option?

how old is your car? its great bmw have offered goodwill to reduce your bill if out of warranty. If your car is less than 5 years I would push for more off the bill in a nice way.

It's utterly mental how expensive some car parts are now. I get that everyone wants the latest things with all the toys but surely this disposable attitude towards parts is not sustainable. It's also likely to end up with more cars scrapped long before their time because the cost of repair simply becomes not only uneconomic but unaffordable for people. This is compounded with so many parts needing specific coding so it's not just a case of ordering a new cluster from a scrappy for £50 and attaching it. And while some of us will in that position get the software and code it, the average person won't and will instead go to a garage who won't be willing to fit used parts and therefore the repair bill can be huge.

Even a non-adaptive xenon on the F30 is over £800 inc VAT, the adaptive xenon is £1150 and then the LED more as you've discovered. That would be absolutely fine if you could replace bulbs in them but if not that is the sort of design that just shouldn't be tolerated in the modern world.

Out of curiosity which part of the headlight has failed?

I have a set of F32 adaptive LED icons which I have fully modified (ripping them apart and customising them) so I might be able to advise

It can't be much older, adaptive LEDs were 65 reg LCI cars onwards. I had a 15 reg pre-LCI that had adaptive Xenons.

It's a shame but this is the kind of thing that has steered me away from some options, adaptive lights, adaptive suspension...

At least they're not totally pulling your pants down. I think I will keep my extended warranty going.

My local BMW dealer told.me lights aren't covered as I have condensation in them again.

on another note I'm sure that I saw somewhere that someone replaced one of their X5 Laser Light LED headlights and it was circa £3.5k

you're going to start writing off modern cars for a few electrical items....that's before you get full EV batteries going

Not even options on the G20/21 which have adaptive LEDs as standard.
