Looking to run a square setup. Couple questions
Hey guys, just purchased a 14 335 m-sport x-drive.
first Xdrive BMW so far so no idea what I can run. I think I want to go with a square 18" setup but not sure what my car currently has oem. Do most xdrive BMW's run square setups or staggered? Any input would be appreciated. |

most m-sport lines have staggered and other lines such as sportline or base may be square... x-drives require the front and rear rolling diameters to be within 1% of each other so square setups will be less problematic and enhance handling by reducing understeer, especially with tires that are 245 or 255 wide. you will also be able to rotate however you desire, not just left to right. for x-drives a typical stagger should be: rear width is 30mm greater than the front and the rear aspect ratio is 5% less than the front. some examples for 18" wheels... 225/45/18F & 255/40/18R 235/45/18F & 265/40/18R 245/40/18F & 275/35/18R use the actual tire specs of the desired brand and model when determining diameters. a typical 18" square set up would be 18x8.5" et35 with 255/40/18 Last edited by alohasurftoad; 02-20-2017 at 05:54 PM.. |

I got a CPO 2013 335ix and it came in a square setup with 225/45/18. I think xdrive usually comes with square setups
I'm purchasing new rims which are 18x8.5 et38, I'm going to get 235/40-18 Usually xdrives would benefit more from square setup instead of staggered. The tires will wear more evenly |

So my next question would be can I run a 45 round tire on a square 18" setup? I've driven BMW's for the last 16 years, only a couple times went with 19" wheels on 2 of my e92's, do you think 18's are too small for a f30? |

i don't think 18's are too small and have 18's them myself because the roads where i live are horrible and i didn't want to compromise ride or pothole protection.
spoke/face design can make the wheels look bigger or smaller. a lip will make the wheel look smaller. mesh look makes the wheels look smaller. thin radial spokes to the outermost edge of the wheel makes it look larger. i look for lighter than oem wheels as well. cast wheels are cheapest and heaviest. flow formed/rotary forged are lighter/stronger than cast but cost more. mold forged are lightest/strongest but cost a lot. most important are good light tires. michelin pilot super sports are still the best in 18's. best street performance, light, best ride/noise. there are more rim and better tire choices in 19's and most here will think 19's look better. get what YOU want not what we want. |

Just was stumped on the conflicting tire sizes/staggered runs of the AWD setups. I appreciate your input. |

ah, you've definitely "been there done that"
so yeah, square set, 18x8.5ish" et 35ish with 235/45/18 (26.33" dia.) lil tall, i prefer wider (best fit on 18x8") 245/40/18 (25.72" dia.) lil short (can fit on 18x8" w/slight bulge) 245/45/18 (26.68" dia.) a bit tall (can fit 18x8" w/slight bulge) 255/40/18 (26ish" oem dia.) slight bulge on 8.5" (better fit on 18x9") |

255/40/18 tire, but 3 questions: 1.) for rim protection sake, can I run a 255/45/18 or will that be too tall? Keep in mind I'm riding high already w/xdrive. 2.). Will a 255/40/18 tire on an et35 9" wide rim sit semi flush? Definitely not fender rolling or anything. 3.). If I were to toss on spacers to get an idea of how an et35 would sit with my oem msport wheels, will that have any adverse effects on the xdrive system? I don't ever recall hearing anything like that but just wondering. And what size would I need? |

255/45/18 is 27.1", you can do it but you'll be changing the gearing a bit which will affect the speedo/odometer and adding weight. it will negatively affect your acceleration and braking though i'm not sure how noticeable it would be. i suppose it would fill the fenderwell gaps better. personally, i'd stick to 255/40/18.
255 on 9" et 35 will be flush, no problem at stock height spacers will not be necessary unless you want it to poke more than flush. http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...40%2F18+square |

I will be running 19x8.5 ET 35 with 255/35r19 as soon as I get my tires mounted Saturday. Will post pictures when it's done. Will atleast give you and idea of fitment (just 1" larger in diameter obviously)

We will know Saturday morning. I've seen it on a couple other cars and it works fine.

Wheels and tires are mounted. They look and fit great! The weight savings over the stock wheels is definitely noticeable in the cars performance and the MPSS stick nicely and ride better than the stock run flat tires. 255 fits easily in the front.

Yes it is 19x8.5 ET 35 with 255/35r19 tires all around. No the car is RWD not AWD.

Recommended setup
Hi there,
I own a 2015 f32 Xdrive (non m sport)... I am planning to buy Ambit wheels FF3 in black chrome.. looking at 18x9.5, could anyone recommend me an aggressive tire setup?? I am looking for something that gives the car a beefy look but doesnt stick out too far.. I don't have any lowering as of yet...
