Thanks guys.
As I was up near Inverness when the car broke down, I have left it with a mechanic up there. (Reccommend garage from a friend). I am still waiting to hear from them what the damage is....so fingers crossed. In the meantime, I have a 3cyl 1.0l fiesta turbo on hire for the week, and its a fantastic yoke. fast and smooth! Swirl flaps are little butterfly valves within the inlet manifold. I know these were a problem in older model 3 series, but not sure about the F30 series... What happens to the swirl flaps is they can get clogged with gunk, and/or break apart whereby the bits can fall into the cylinder causing major damage. Is there a procedure on how to remove the inlet manifold? And EGR cooler? |

Just heard back from the mechanic...
EGR cooler is blocked, which caused the inlet manifold to heat up and melt. New EGR cooler + valve, inlet manifold, MAP sensor & gaskets. £1100 on parts 4.5hours on labour. Going ahead with the fix. Next question is should I sell it? or is it safe to keep.... |

The N47tu/N57 has swirl flaps, but they are of a different design than on m47/m57. It looks more robust.
