B58 Coolant loss / Radiator Damage / AC loss
Just wondering if many of you guys have suffered from radiator damage from stones?
Speaking to a number of 1 / 2 series owners it's fairly common. I'm currently facing a £1000 bill due to a stone wiping out the condenser and another rad. I had an empty 2nd coolant circuit... Fun. Now BMW have altered the B58 layout and has added "rock guards". Fun. |

The condenser is in front of the radiator in order to protect the radiator from stones.
My condenser got a bit fragmented which stopped the AC cooling but no stones passed through it. Condenser replacement alone cost me about 600$ (in Denmark)

For clarification there is a big thread on the babybmw forums (220+ posts) where people are getting stone damage causing big bills.
http://www.babybmw.net/forum/viewtop...?f=74&t=110573 I have a spreadsheet where people are posting details of damage, cost and the result. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...9BA/edit#gid=0 |

I'm not doubting you just curious on how the radiator could get damaged. Typically a car will have a radiator and ac condenser as a single unit or at least attached with the AC condenser in front. I know ours additionally have a small intercooler. What is the setup on the 340i?

Add me to the club.
Dealership is not covering under warranty since it was a stone impact. The addition of rock guards at the end of 2017 acknowledges the design flaw. Also no warning that the reservoir is dry other than the pump constantly cycling. Most probably wouldn't even notice, causing further damage. If they can't add rock guards with the OEM replacement I'll buy a CSF. Updated the spreadsheet tracking this issue. Thanks to the owner for putting it together. Maybe if I can point BMW NA to a specific case where a precedent was set they will cover it. Thank you very much! |

Yes I had the same on my 2017 340 - I took it to the dealer and in the end BMW ended up paying for the parts and I paid labor and the stone guards were installed in addition to the replacement radiator. My build was, as I recall, only a couple months prior to when the stone guards started being installed
That said after dropping at the dealer I did proactively reach out to the BMW to make my case that it was/is a known issue. Dealer initially wanted to charge me for everything (and at the time was not aware of the stone guards) This was a couple years ago and that car is now gone - however if a work order would help anyone let me know and I'll reach out to my dealer in hopes of getting a copy |
