Idrive software update
Hello friends,
I just bought a used BMW 428ix, I noticed that the software of the idrive is a bit outdated. I downloaded the new iDrive software from BMWs website (using my VIN), do you know if I update the software, would I lose my existing codings ? Thanks |

yes, usually an update wipes the coding so you'll have to do it again.
last time i was in for my last free oil change, they told me there was an idrive update and it would erase my coding and wanted to know if i wanted to do the update. they updated it, i recoded before i left. |

Updates you do yourself probably won't delete any coding. Dealer installed updates will, and they'll also cause some items to no longer be able to be coded, and they may lock the DME as well.

You're talking about this? https://www.bmw.com/en/footer/software-updates.html
This update is for expanding compatibility of phones that can pair with the car. If you can connect your phone with the car just fine, the update probably won't do anything. I have done it though with a USB stick and no it won't reset anything (as it's not really an idrive update). More like a cellular connectivity update. |

I've never seen any "off the web" updates for BMW that gets you anything other than fixes for iOS Bluetooth support. The changelogs are all "added support for Apple iOS xxxxx".
Those updates don't effect coding. If the dealer does a full software update, they need to reset all codings to prevent any compatibility issues, and those can come with additional features if they have any. |
