Drivetrain malfunction warning after egr cooler replacement

Hi all.

I had my car in last Friday (28/05/2021) for the egr cooler recall. They replaced my cooler for a new one. Anyway nearly a week later I am taking off for work and all of a sudden the car loses power and goes into limp mode. I pulled in, turned the car off and restarted it and everything is fine again.

I used my friends diagnostic tool this evening and a fault for the "particulate filter system" showed on it. Just wondering has this drivetrain malfunction happened anyone else after the egr cooler replacement? I'm thinking while they changed the cooler they possibly damaged the egr valve or haven't reassembled it as if was before.

I have also noticed sometimes I feel like the car has what I could describe as a "miss" where I put my foot down and it loses power for a second. Should I call the dealer and tell them what has happened? I just don't want to leave the car in for them to try charge me a diagnostic bill if they turn around and say the problem is not related to the work they've carried out.

I find it very coincidental though that my car was in for the egr cooler replacement not even a week ago and now it throws up malfunction that has never happened at any stage before. Any info appreciated.

That fault is:

(from BMW diag system) 0x244800 Info - particle filter system: limited remaining mileage of particle filter.

It is purely an information code, and does not trigger check engine lights nor drivetrain errors. It is simply a calculation out of the ecu.

I would check for additional stored errors in all systems, including gearbox (if automatic)

ok thanks. I'm not sure if the diagnostics tool I have will be able to delve deeper for other error codes? would I need a BMW specific diagnostics tool for that? Also my car is a manual transmission.

Agree with Enabled; that code is from a previous instance unrelated to the issue now.

You can check the functionality of your iCarSoft device by consulting its owner's manual. I think Foxwell NT510 or 530 tools are more useful, based on what I've seen.

It sounds like the EGR valve might be sticking.

Drivetrain malfunction warning after egr cooler replacement

Contacted the dealership today about the issue. They said themselves over the phone that it sounded like there was a fault with the egr valve. I've the car booked in for diagnostics with them next week which they said they won't charge for and if it does come back as an egr fault they will try and claim a good will gesture to fit a replacement valve.

I just got the same message about 2 weeks ago. Scanned car and got a egr outside limit code. That's under extended warranty so brought it to the dealer. Picked up the car and it wasn't the egr valve they said. They replaced the transfer case under warranty

Left the car with the dealer and they contacted me today. It was indeed a fault with the egr valve. They replaced the valve under a BMW good will gesture. Pretty happy to be honest my cars a 2013 with 150,000 miles so it's well out of warranty.

Ya! Was like thousands of dollars of repairs they threw at it. Funny enough, last night I got the same error again. Drivetrain malfunction. Code P049D

No one in service would listen to me about the EGR issue.
