New 4GC unveiled

What do we think?

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/n...p-range-topper

Grille aside (which I still hate), the rest of it looks really good in a sleek if a touch conservative sort of way - elegant. I particularly like the new door handle treatment - way better than on the 4 coupe/cabrio and the 3, which always looks awkward to me.

Door handles still look odd, the grilles on the darker cars in the flesh don't look so bad, but the back end of the M4C does look quite beastly on the road.

I do like the more pronounced ducktail boot (maybe its the slightly different angle), but I think overall the F36 looks sleeker. The clearly visible body line helps as well.

Yuk - side profile looks more like the abominable GT than the F36 - why make it taller if aesthetics is important at all?!? Anyway, might help F36 owners retain a better value on their cars, so thank you bmw design team

Looks well proportioned.

The grill looks better in the flesh but is still an aquired taste.

Except for the fact that the one thing with a front end uglier than a cooking 4-series is an M4 - it looks genuinely terrible.

I'd have bought an M4 version of my current car in a heartbeat. But not sure now - but like BMW not making an M3 Touring until the M3 was, for the first time, a butt-ugly car.

Here's hoping Alpina get their mitts on a 4GC for the first time. That would be interesting.

If the time came in the future to buy a new gran coupe and i couldn't find any newer f32,f36 then i would not mind this.
After I was rude about the styling of the new 4, Vines asked me I'd be interested in replacing my current pre-LCI 440i GC with a last-off-the-line 440i GC. But no, I cannot see the appeal of a like-for-like replacement, even allowing for the LCI tweaks over the last five years - life's too short to spend that long effectively driving the same car.

A change is nice now and again.

Reminds me of a Mondeo

I may be being a bit harsh on the Mondeo if you take the front profile into account

I don't mind it. I think if I was going to "upgrade" to one, I'd probably get the i4 though.

Yes, the height to length ratio has altered. It is much higher (relatively) than before. The press photos mask that.

Interesting to actually see it in the flesh.

The previous 4GC was very elegant.

I really wanted to like this car. I even liked the grille when the first renderings came out and I still like the grille in the flesh. But overall, it’s not different enough outside or (digital display aside) in for me.
Add to that the inflated cost and the lack of commuting these days and I’ll hang on to my F36 thank you.

PS these promo shots don’t help either with the 1990s Rover paint colours, no privacy glass etc.

I like it, especially that colour.

However, compared to the old model it's got a fatter arse and does look like a 3GT in profile.

For me, the old model was sufficiently different from the 3 saloon to warrant the increased premium. Not so sure about this new one.

Perhaps they should just be done with it and call it a Vitesse.

You sure? I drive an F36 and I think this new version looks much more different all round to the current G30 3-series than the F36 ever looked different to an F30.

But surely "different" looks should also mean "improved" to warrant a purchase?

Nobody told BMW that unfortunately. I struggle with most of the current range TBH.

I'm not a fan of its looks, not that I'm biased from owning an F36...The 4 series grilles still do nothing for me.

However... I would absolutely go for an M4 GC! I was thinking the M3 touring might be worth saving for, but an M4 GC is the one.

I don't like the looks on the new 3/4, but I prefer the M grilles over the 4 series, especially in darker colours. The fact is though, the new M cars are getting such good reviews...

This is all academic anyway, I won't be able to afford one for a very long time.

Seeing as BMW owned Rover a while back, maybe they've uncovered a long forgotten stash of the lovely Nightfire Red colour. If they could offer the same colour combo as my P6, Huntsman vinyl roof over Almond I'd be first in the queue!

Totally agree with this. The grills are the least of it's problems. Shame

I really like the look of it! Agree with the boot being a bit taller though and doesn’t look as sleek, but overall I really like it.

Was having a play with it on the configurator yesterday morning but doesn’t seem to be there today. Sunset orange for me I thought looked very nice! Only snag is the 60k price tag (M440i) with a few options (I know pre discount) seems quite pricey.
