The eBay seller came through for me with a new y-cable, so I'm rocking with my iPod in my F30. All is good.

This came in mail today and it works really well. The iPod and BMW sync up almost perfectly (some of my Korean font is broken on the BMW) and the sound output is definitively better than the radio, given the right encoding.

HOWEVER, I have a question for those with the Y-cable. When I turn off the engine, does the car continue to charge the iPod?
I stuck around the car to see what would happen and the iPod went automatically to "pause" but stayed on because the car acts like a charger. I don't want to drain the car's battery because of an iPod. I also don't want to remember to disconnect/reconnect the cable everytime I get out/in of the car...

EDIT: I drive the F30 328i, no nav.

I don't think you have to worry about discharging the car battery. Once the ipod is charged it should stop drawing power.

So... just picked up my new F30 328, Technology Package, Premium Package, Premium Sound and tried to hook up my ipod with the standard white Apple cable. No dice. I thought with these packages it should work? Am I still going to need the BMW Y-Cable?

I think you need BMW Assist / Enhanced Bluetooth if you want to use the Apple cable or stream audio.

that is so dumb, because if you get BMW Assist/Enhanced BT you would go wireless! i didn't want wireless audio or Assist, and my dealer said no problem withs the Tech pkg you do not need the Y cable anymore. he said it comes with a combos like the F10s, it appears he was wrong! ugh, this is so frustrating!

i will negotiate with my dealer to throw in a Y cable.

^ Exactly what I do. 32 gb thumb drive in the console and 12.5 gb of music loaded on the hard drive. Never use any of my iPods in the car anymore.

The only downside I can imagine is that you won't have albums AND playlists on a USB unless you duplicate tracks into separate album & playlist folders. Does that make sense and am I right?

So, I could put all my albums on a USB stick but presumably I wouldn't have any playlists for them unless I saved them in a separate playlist folder as well? Thanks.

Do you need some option to get the Hard Drive or is it Standard with iDrive?

It comes only if you get the tech pack / professional NAV. No hard drive on the stock car I'm afraid.

Only the tech package comes with the hard drive. 12.5 gb for music files, the rest is for navigation data/maps.

I'm a little disappointed that BMW doesn't let you plug in the iPod with the white cable as standard. A 16,000 dollar Kia comes with that as standard, and I'm paying close to 45 k for a luxury sport sedan and can't plug it in? Also, a 35,000 dollar base Infiniti G sedan with no navigation comes with a 30 gig hard drive. It makes BMW look a little money hungry, but who isn't these days. Literally, this is my only problem with the new 3 series. (Obviously, it didn't keep me from buying one. ) Anyone know if the Y-cable has any noticeable effect on quality of sound?
