Update: No issues since BMW replaced the egr valve about a month ago. Fingers crossed it stays that way. Fortunately, the parts and labor are warrantied for 2 years so I'm not losing too much sleep over it.

Hi,

I got 3 codes from Bimmerlink today which are the codes you had listed: 255B00, 272F00, and 272E00. From your post am I reading that you replaced your EGR valve 4 times and the last time it went away?

My car is currently driving fine, it's a 2014 328d with 118K km, no mods other than a few bimmercode changes, and the car is out of warranty as well.

The EGR valve looks like a pretty straight forward replacement from the online videos. I've reset the code for now and will if the codes return tomorrow. If the codes return, does it sound like a valve replacement is the way to go?

Strange how your DIY replacements didn't work, but somehow the dealer replacement worked?

My symptoms were those codes and the occasional exhaust gas smell in the cabin so if you have similar symptoms I assume you have a similar issue.

In terms of the replacement parts that my indie mechanic installed, I'm not sure if it was a parts issue or an installation issue but the dealer got it working first try and I haven't had a problem with it since.

I have got an issue with the same codes: 255B00, 255B00, 272F00 - Maximum drivetrain output not available Error.
EGR valve was replaced with 11718594492 and it is fine for 6 months now.

PSA: Proactive replacement of EGR valve

Another member brought it up on the N47 forum and I think it deserves special mention.

For those of us impacted by the newest round of EGR cooler recalls, it may be a good idea to have the dealer replace the EGR valve as well. Cost should be just at most the valve itself since the recall work requires moving the existing valve to the new cooler. At about $250-300 for a new valve, I would consider it cheap insurance, more so if you source the valve from FCP Euro and the dealer installs it for you.

I'm not sure if the recall calls for a valve replacement, but I highly doubt it.

The codes popped up for me yesterday. I reset them once and they came on about 50 miles later. Emailed my SA to see if the fix was coming soon. My plan was to replace the EGR with the cooler, but it's probably moot at this point. I may end up removing and cleaning the EGR this weekend.

Any advice would be appreciated, such as do I really need to figure out ISTA first?

Had those same codes about 6 months ago.

I ended up removing the EGR valve, cleaning it with some degreaser fluid and brush, then lubing the shaft with good quality stuff and reinstalling.

Haven't had issues since, but the next step will be to just replace the valve. Maybe when they do the EGR cooler recall...

That's the plan for the weekend. Thank God for heated garages. What lubricant did you use on the shaft?

What that guy is doing in that video is basically nothing, what you need to do is grab ISTA and within the troubleshooting section is a suite of function tests, that will allow you to test the entire Air Mass System including the EGR operation.

People just swap these EGR's expecting them to work but you've got to tell the car you're replacing it in the adaptations function before you change it, let it go to sleep, change the EGR, run the engine for 15 seconds, then switch off the ignition and let the car go to sleep to save the settings or the car won't know the valve end stop for fully open & closed.

The is also a vacuum controlled bypass flap that can seize up or the pipe can be chafed or the pressure control valve can get stuck. This bypasses the EGR cooler during cold start and routes gasses through an open port rather then the cooling ports. When it seizes open, it blocks the cooling pipes in the EGR and causes a plausibility fault.
