Oil change interval coding
Hi,
Can someone tell me if we can change the coded 08KC (15000 miles / 24) oil change interval to a more conservative interval. I know 08KL is 10000 / 12). Maybe some of you have even shorter intervals ? The oil change interval code will be listed in your option code list if you read your VIN J |

OK, i just have seen that there are different codings for different cars.
But first the coding for the Kombi which is the same for all cars: KOMBI L7_MID > CBS_Konfiguration 3009 > CBS_WEG_FAKTOR_FZG_CHECK_DEPEND = faktor_5 KOMBI L7_MID > CBS_Konfiguration 3009 > CBS_ZEIT_FAKTOR_FZG_CHECK_DEPEND = faktor_4 Then there is a coding in the DME or DDE which depends on the engine i think. Here i have 3 different BMW models as examples: 328i ----- DME > BSU-Config 3320 > OEL-Config = Wert_14 320D ----- DME__DDE7xx > OHNE_ZEITLIMIT 3701 > OWI_NEU = wert_11 335D ----- DME__DDE7xx > OHNE_ZEITLIMIT 3701 > OWI_NEU = wert_15 All these codings are for the 12TKM 12Month interval. |

A far easier method is to keep the receipt for your oil change, or for the oil you purchased if you do it yourself, and write the mileage on it. Change it again when you've reached your desired interval. You should be saving all your receipts as proof of service being done anyway.

Mine was part of the BMW change of mind when they started covering oil changes and suddenly the oil life span doubled.... 24000km between oil changes is crazy, even for the best synthetic oil. |

The only reminder I need is a calendar. I change my oil every April. In climates where it goes below freezing in winter you should always do an oil change in the spring, to get rid of the crud that builds up in the crankcase over the winter. If you drive enough to require more than one change per year space them evenly, as in April and October for two changes per year.

Hi all.
I know this was a year ago but I thought I'd share my experience of this. I successfully coded this on an F80 yesterday and it was pretty easy. No flash required. I just changed the VO to replace 8KA with 8KL and then VO coded the DME and KOMBI. I also did the HU-NBT and FEM_BODY for good measure but not sure it was necessary. Of course, I then had to re-do my FDL coding in these modules but that was pretty quick and easy as I had it all recorded. Nothing changed at first but, after a short drive, the CBS interval updated and it looks spot-on. Last Oil change was 2000 miles ago and it now wants the next in 8000 miles instead of 18000 miles !!!!! Crazy. BMW bang on about how important it is to maintain the vehicle according to their specified schedule and use any failure to do this to void your warranty. And then they set an oil change interval of 20000 miles. Last edited by Discordia; 05-16-2021 at 04:14 AM.. |

I have done the same on a F10-M5. 8KA to 8KL. No flashing required.
More detail here... https://www.bimmerfest.com/threads/s.../post-13533186 Discordia, can you confirm the oil change date changed for you as well? For me the km's changed (reduced to 15,000 from 30,000) but the future date remained the same (still 24 months from last oil change). I suspect that a reset is required to get the new oil change date. Someone else has indicated the same to me. i.e. at the next service reset the date will change (to 12 month intervals in the case of 8KL). |

Sorry, folks. Didn't notice these updates.
You're right, the date doesn't change. Mine currently says 7000 miles, 11/2022. I sure it will change when the next oil change is done. Odd, though. It knows the date of the last change, so why can't it calculate 12 months from then? It obviously only calculates it at the reset. I didn't notice because I've never done oil changes based on time before. I've always reached the mileage before the date, as I did about 15000 miles a year. That will change now, though, as I've retired, bought an M3 and I'm not going to do 8000 miles in a year! |

I recently did my oil chance plus reset. The km’s were reset to around 16k (km), but the date changed to two years in the future. That wasn’t suppose to happen, what went wrong? I coded 8KL.

Just wanted to put a quick update on that thread.
I did change my VO to 8KP and then coded kombi but that wasn't succesful. What seemed to have worked for me is: -Replace the actual VO with the new one you want to use using Esys then code the Kombi and the DME -When that's done, use ISTA to force a reprogram and again a recode of both Kombi and DME -Use ISTA CBS value adjustment to force a reset of the oil interval to a new full cycle or you can also tell ISTA when and at what milleage you did your last reset and the system will adjust based on the new coding (as long as the new coding as a shorter split than the one you had... ISTA wil not allow to push an oil change further in the future, only to shorten it. |

If you were to do this and change the oil interval to something much shorter/more traditional (i.e. 8KP 8000/12), would you be able to take more advantage of BMWs $199 oil change service? It seems like the biggest complaint with that is they only go off of the onboard computer which is default 10,000 mi but if we were to change it to 5,000...
