Paddle retrofit, wires to gearbox really needed?

Hi all!

I'm posting in the 3-series forum because there's much more activity here. Originally this question is for my F25 X3.

I’m retrofitting paddles. Got the right steering wheel and coded the necessary modules (CAS, KOMBI, EGS) after changing my VO accordingly with codes 2TB and 710 (not sure yet if these are fully correct). Unfortunately it doesn’t work. Looking at TIS my understanding is that this is because I’m lacking the SP_SIG wire from the steering wheel column cluster to the junction box, but also an SP_SIG wire from the junction box towards the EGS. I’m wondering tho whether the wires towards the EGS are really needed? TIS specifically mentions < 2016 and mine is from 2016 (EDIT: production date is actually 2015).

Another thing that made me doubt is I can put the gearbox into manual using the shift lever and shift manually that way. Why don’t the paddles use the same signal?

Anyone with experience on this?

Hard to answer your question as long as you talk with term like «Some wire, «a controller».
Please be specific, This is very ambiguous.

But yes you need the SP_SIG wire from Paddles to SZL (Steering wheel switch cluster) to Junction Box and most probably also to the gearbox from the junction box. BMW usually don’t put wires there, just for fun and without function. So I will assume it is needed. But this wire might be preinstalled.

Also what did you exactly code? If I remember correcly F25 didn’t have 2TB but 2TE, 2XA or 7XA.

Thanks for replying and you’re right mate, I should’ve taken the effort to name things right, I’ll amend my OP soon. You got the exact gist though and I appreciate the info.

I haven’t got the SZL module, at least I didn’t see it listed in ESys, so I’ll have a look soon again after removing the wheel. I was able to connect the paddles to preinstalled connectors within the steering wheel but I see no wires going to the junction box (I looked at the junction box). And also none going to the gearbox module (junction connector located under the hood).

In terms of options, right now I settled with 2TB and 710 because I couldn’t find better codes. I indeed noticed that although 2TB calculates fine, it doesn’t “aktiv” the sport gearbox. I’ll try 2TE soon. (EDIT: after recoding a few times, 2TB did in fact aktiv the sport gearbox)

So after some more research it literally states on TIS that the signal of the paddles is only conveyed through the steering wheel column and junction box but not processed. I guess that’s why there is a need for a dedicated signal wire toward the gearbox module. And the shift lever signal probably cannot be used because the lever is mounted on top of the gearbox and therefore has more direct control (guessing here).

I am not 100% sure about 2TE but F25 is little bit weird in many things and little bit unsure but it looks like that there is difference between pre-LCI and LCI. This is what I know:
For pre-LCI
205 / 2TB = Normal / sport gearbox
2AX = 255 steering wheel + paddles
7AX = 710 steering wheel + paddles

for LCI
205 Normal tranmission
2TB Sport Transmission with paddles
2TE Normal Transmission with paddles

So in case of LCI it should actually work when coding 2TB.

SZL is part of the Footwell module but in case of F25 you are correct that signal is only conveyed.
If your is produced after 03/2016 then you only need to pull one wire all the way to the gearbox. In case of production date before 03/2016 then you need to pull also the ground all the way. After 03/2016 you can stop after SZL. See the diagrams.

Basically it can be divided in 4 stretches
1) Within steering wheel to SZL
2) SZL (A83) to junction box (Z1)
3) JB (Z1) to X13*5B in motorcompartment
4) X13*5b to transmission.

If you are lucky is 4 already pre-wired from factory.

Thanks again for replying.
I can confirm that number 4 is in place, there’s a junction under the hood and the signal cable is going from the junction to the gearbox. That means worst case I need to lay the signal wire and ground towards that junction. I mentioned I have a 2016 before but actually its production date is end of 2015 so I’ll have to take that route.

For the steering wheel codes, I did some research which I reported in another thread here:
https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2165815

I guess that now answers the question: yes, I do need to lay the wires all the way towards that junction under the hood. Thanks a lot for helping me get to that conclusion.
